Hayley Atwell Says Captain Carter’s Death in ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Was a ‘Complete Disservice’ to the Character

Fan-favorite Marvel characters rarely get the send-off audiences hope for, especially when they’re wedged into a multiverse-hopping cameo alongside a dozen other variants competing for screen time. Few examples of that problem have generated as much lingering frustration as one particular blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from 2022.

Hayley Atwell has spent over a decade building Peggy Carter into one of the MCU’s most beloved characters, from her debut in “Captain America: The First Avenger” through her own spin-off series and multiple franchise appearances. Her alternate-universe counterpart, Captain Carter, first found life in the animated series “What If…?” before finally making her live-action debut in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

That live-action introduction didn’t go the way fans, or Atwell herself, had hoped. Speaking at the For the Love of Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell revisited her frustration with how the film ultimately handled her character’s brief and brutal on-screen fate.

“If I’m really, like, brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they, how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene,” Atwell said during her convention panel. “She’s like, ‘I could do this all day.’ And then it’s like frisbee’d to death, and we’re like, ‘No, you couldn’t.’ And then people going, ‘Oh, she’s so lame.'”

The scene in question sees Captain Carter, as part of the alternate-universe Illuminati team, confidently declaring her signature catchphrase moments before Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch kills her using her own shield. The abrupt, almost comedic nature of her death has remained a sore point for fans who felt the character deserved a more meaningful introduction to live-action after her popularity in animated form.

Atwell revealed that she attempted to push back on how the scene was written and staged, telling the filmmaking team she wanted to add something more substantial to the character’s brief appearance. According to Atwell, the response she received was that they would listen to her concerns, only to ultimately decide against making any changes.

That creative pushback speaks to a broader frustration Atwell has voiced in the past about the scene. She’s previously described feeling “so undermined” watching her character’s memorable “I could do this all day” line get immediately followed by an almost throwaway death, calling the moment a case where Captain Carter was set up as a potential hero only to be discarded within seconds.

The scene’s larger context hasn’t helped its reputation among fans, either. Captain Carter’s death occurred alongside several other beloved Illuminati members, including John Krasinski’s Reed Richards and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, all of whom met similarly abrupt fates at Wanda Maximoff’s hands during the film’s darker turn into full villain territory for the character.

For a character introduced with so much promise in “What If…?,” where Peggy Carter received the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, the live-action version’s brief and undignified ending felt like a significant step down for many longtime fans. That disconnect between the character’s animated potential and her live-action treatment has only grown more pronounced as Atwell has continued speaking candidly about the experience in interviews and convention appearances since the film’s release.

With Marvel continuing to explore multiverse storytelling across its ongoing slate, including the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday,” questions about whether Captain Carter could ever return in a more substantial capacity remain an open topic among fans. For now, Atwell’s latest comments make clear that even years removed from the film’s release, the character’s treatment in “Multiverse of Madness” still stings.
