Fans looking forward to returning to Westeros have a new reason to celebrate. HBO has announced a major discount on HBO Max subscriptions ahead of the season three premiere of House of the Dragon.

The streaming service has reduced the price of its annual plans by 40 percent, giving viewers a cheaper way to access the upcoming season and other popular shows. The offer applies to all three HBO Max tiers, including the ad-supported plan, the standard plan, and the premium option.

There is one important detail, though. The discount is only available for annual subscriptions, meaning customers must pay for 12 months upfront instead of choosing a month-to-month payment option.

The timing of the deal appears designed to attract more viewers before the return of House of the Dragon. The hit fantasy series is coming back with its third season, continuing the story of the Targaryen family and the brutal conflict that threatens to destroy their dynasty.

Season three of House of the Dragon premieres on HBO on June 21, and will feature eight episodes. The new season continues adapting George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the book that explores the history of House Targaryen before the events of Game of Thrones.

The third season was officially ordered on June 13, 2024, shortly before the second season arrived. Production later took place from March through October 2025, with Ryan Condal returning as the main showrunner. HBO has also already ordered a fourth season, showing the company’s confidence in the future of the series.

The new discount comes at a time when HBO Max is expanding its lineup of major genre shows. Along with House of the Dragon, the platform is also preparing for the arrival of the Harry Potter series in December, giving fantasy fans another major reason to keep their subscriptions.

Interest in House of the Dragon remains strong, with early reviews for season three showing positive reactions. The upcoming season is currently holding the highest critics score for the show on Rotten Tomatoes, reaching 97 percent based on early reviews.

The sale will only be available for a limited time and ends on July 15, giving fans a short window to take advantage of the lower price.

Warner Bros. Discovery has also reported strong growth for HBO Max. According to the company’s latest quarterly report, the streaming service has passed 140 million subscribers worldwide and is expected to reach 150 million by the end of the year.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told shareholders in May that the company is seeing strong growth in subscriptions and expects that momentum to continue.

“We are seeing healthy acceleration and subscriber-related revenue growth, which we expect will pick up real pace in Q2 and through the rest of the year,” Zaslav said.

With House of the Dragon returning, new fantasy projects on the way, and a major price cut available, HBO Max is clearly trying to bring in more viewers and keep fans invested in its growing lineup. For those waiting to see the next chapter of the Targaryen story, the timing of the offer could not be better.
