HBO is giving fans a first look at the magic behind its new Harry Potter series with a standalone documentary called Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic. The special, set to premiere on April 5, will show how the first season of the beloved story was reimagined for television.

The documentary offers behind-the-scenes footage and reveals the process of casting the main roles. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton were selected to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Nick Frost, who plays Hagrid, narrates the special and guides viewers through the making of the show.

One designer featured in the teaser explained, “We’re adding a level of world-building beyond what the audience is familiar with.” The special also includes appearances from John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu, who portray Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape.

Lithgow reflected on the significance of joining the project, saying, “To play in a sandbox this big, it really is incredible. To reimagine the Harry Potter canon, to let it breathe – we get to enact all the things that you know are going on in the wings, but you don’t see them.”

Lithgow also shared how meaningful the role feels, adding, “You wait forever to do something that means that much to people.” The documentary not only focuses on the actors but also highlights the technical skills required to bring the wizarding world to life on screen.

The first season adapts The Philosopher’s Stone and is written by Francesca Gardiner, who is known for her work on Succession. HBO has plans to adapt all seven Harry Potter novels into individual seasons, which could keep the series running for years.

Although there has been some discussion online about the original author’s past controversies, anticipation for the series remains high. The first trailer broke viewership records for HBO, showing that fans are eager to revisit the magical world.

Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic promises to give audiences a full look at the effort, creativity, and passion behind the new adaptation, from casting to set design to the small details that make the wizarding world feel alive.

Fans can watch the documentary starting April 5, months before the series itself is set to debut around Christmas, giving a rare glimpse into how one of the most famous stories in modern literature is coming to life on screen.
