HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Officially Reveals Dominic McLaughlin’s Redesigned Lightning Scar
HBO’s much-anticipated adaptation has spent months carefully building anticipation ahead of its Christmas Day premiere, steadily revealing new footage, cast photos, and world-building details along the way. With the show now just months from release, the network has continued rolling out fresh imagery meant to distinguish this version from Warner Bros.’ original film franchise.
That distinction just became a lot more visible. HBO has officially confirmed a redesigned version of Harry’s scar for star Dominic McLaughlin, giving fans their clearest look yet at how different this Boy Who Lived will appear compared to Radcliffe’s big-screen counterpart.
The new design appeared prominently in promotional material for this year’s Back to Hogwarts celebration, marking the network’s most detailed reveal of the scar to date. According to reporting, the redesigned mark is noticeably rougher and more textured than the clean, precisely drawn zigzag audiences grew accustomed to across all eight original films.
That shift appears intentional. Some fans had long argued that Radcliffe’s scar looked too neatly drawn on, almost cartoonish at times, particularly as the film series grew darker and more serious with each installment. HBO’s new version leans into a grittier, more realistic texture that some observers have compared to a Lichtenberg figure, a branching pattern often associated with lightning-strike scarring.
This isn’t the first glimpse fans have gotten of the redesign. An earlier first-look image of McLaughlin in costume last year already showed a slimmer, fainter version of the scar positioned differently than Radcliffe’s, sitting closer to his temple rather than directly above the eyebrow. That initial reveal sparked some debate among fans, with a handful expressing disappointment that the scar wasn’t more prominent given its importance as a recognizable plot device throughout the story.
Despite that early pushback, HBO appears to have stuck with the rougher, less polished redesign as production has continued. The network has emphasized that visual changes like this are part of a broader effort to differentiate its adaptation from the films, extending beyond the scar to other iconic elements like Hogwarts castle, wand designs, and costume choices throughout the Wizarding World.
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ marks one of the most ambitious television undertakings in recent memory, with plans to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels across seven full seasons. The series is positioned to hew more closely to the source material than the original films did, expanding on scenes and character dynamics that were trimmed or altered for the big screen.
The cast includes McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, alongside a stacked supporting lineup featuring Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell.
With the series set to premiere on December 25 on HBO and HBO Max, fans now have one more piece of the puzzle in understanding just how distinct this adaptation intends to be from its cinematic predecessor. Between the scar redesign and the broader promise of a more faithful, book-accurate storytelling approach, HBO seems determined to carve out its own identity within the Wizarding World.
