HBO’s New ‘Harry Potter’ Poster Puts the Boy Who Lived Front and Center With a Hogwarts Reflection
Few franchises can generate excitement from a single image the way ‘Harry Potter‘ can. Fans have spent months picking apart every teaser, trailer and cast photo from HBO’s reboot, and the series is now close enough that each new reveal feels like a countdown tick. The latest ‘Harry Potter’ series poster is the newest sign that the Christmas premiere is nearly here.
The series adapts J.K. Rowling’s books as an eight-episode first season titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. It stands separate from the films starring Daniel Radcliffe, and HBO has described it as a faithful adaptation that will span a decade. Development began in January 2021, and the premiere was originally expected in 2027 before it arrived sooner than planned.
HBO has now unveiled a new poster that puts Harry front and center. It is a tight close-up of his face, showing his signature round glasses, messy dark hair and lightning-shaped scar. The most striking detail is in the lens, where a reflection of Hogwarts hints at the magical world waiting for him, with a tiny green glint adding a touch of enchantment.
The words “The Boy Who Lived” appear across the glasses, leaving no doubt whose story this is. At the bottom, the HBO Original label and the Harry Potter logo sit above the date, December 25, with HBO Max branding. The series premieres Friday, December 25, on HBO, with streaming on HBO Max where available.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. HBO considered around 40,000 actors before announcing the trio in May 2025. McLaughlin has appeared in the Sky comedy ‘Grow’, Stanton played Matilda in ‘Matilda The Musical’ on the West End, and the series is Stout’s first major role.
The cast of grown-ups is just as striking. John Lithgow is Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Severus Snape and Nick Frost is Hagrid. Warwick Davis returns as Flitwick, and the ensemble also includes Luke Thallon as Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Filch and Anton Lesser as Ollivander.
HBO’s marketing has been paying off. According to Deadline, the first teaser, released in March, became the most-watched in HBO and HBO Max history. Since then, the network has released a 30-minute sneak peek titled ‘Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic’, which explores casting, costumes, effects and sets, along with a first full trailer on September 2.
That trailer featured new footage from Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, including scenes only hinted at in the books. Earlier previews showed Harry in the cupboard under the stairs, Hagrid’s arrival, a trip to Diagon Alley and the run through Platform 9¾. Reports also say the show will include moments and characters from the books that have not yet been shown on screen.

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner, and ‘Succession’ director Mark Mylod is directing multiple episodes. Hans Zimmer has composed a new score, which adds another layer of prestige. Rowling is executive producing.
HBO has already committed to the future. The series was renewed in May for a second season adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, with production set to start in late 2026. That confidence suggests the network sees the show as a long-term pillar.
The poster is simple, but it signals a clear tone. Rather than packing the frame with characters, it focuses on a single face and a single reflection, which suggests the series wants to center Harry’s perspective as he discovers the wizarding world. The reflection of Hogwarts in his glasses is a neat visual metaphor for seeing a new world through new eyes.
It also helps the show stand apart from the films. By leaning on its own imagery, HBO is telling fans that this is a new take rather than a retread.
There are still a few open questions. HBO hasn’t shared how episodes will be released, and while the Christmas Day debut is locked, the schedule for the rest of the season may vary. Fans will also be watching to see how closely the show hews to the book while expanding on it.
For now, the poster adds to a growing sense of anticipation. With the premiere less than two months away, the next few weeks are likely to bring more previews.
