‘Heart of the Beast’ Star Brad Pitt Reveals He Pretends to Be Matt Damon When Fans Can’t Quite Place Him
Brad Pitt has spent the past few weeks on the promotional circuit for his upcoming survival thriller ‘Heart of the Beast,’ reuniting with director David Ayer for the first time since their 2014 war drama ‘Fury.’ The film marks a notable shift for Pitt, trading tanks and combat for the Alaskan wilderness alongside a retired military dog.
That press tour recently brought Pitt to Colorado, where he shared a story with the crowd at an early screening that had little to do with the movie itself and everything to do with his decades-long friendship with fellow A-lister Matt Damon. The two actors first became close while filming ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ back in 2001, and they have spent the years since playfully ribbing each other across interviews and public appearances.
According to the story Pitt told the audience, a Postmates delivery driver recently recognized him but couldn’t quite place where he knew him from. Rather than correct the confusion, Pitt decided to have some fun with it, telling the driver his name was “Matt Damon.”
The driver, apparently satisfied with the answer, responded with total conviction: “He goes ‘I knew it dude, I knew it!'” Pitt recounted at the screening, drawing laughs from the crowd as he described the moment his fake identity was fully accepted without a second thought.

This isn’t the first time the two actors have been mixed up publicly, and it likely won’t be the last. Just this past summer, during the World Cup Final broadcast on July 19, a Fox Sports commentator mistakenly identified Damon as Pitt while the camera lingered on him in the crowd, only to catch the error moments later and correct himself on air.
Pitt and Damon have leaned into the confusion for years rather than fight it, often referencing their look-alike status in interviews and joint appearances since their ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ days. Both actors have Academy Awards to their names as well, with Pitt winning Best Supporting Actor for ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ and Damon taking home Best Original Screenplay for ‘Good Will Hunting’ alongside co-writer Ben Affleck.
‘Heart of the Beast’ hits theaters on September 25, with Pitt starring as James Belmont, a former Army Special Forces officer who finds himself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his retired combat dog, Odin, following a plane crash. The film also stars J.K. Simmons and marks Pitt’s second collaboration with Ayer following their work together on ‘Fury’ more than a decade ago.
Given how often Pitt and Damon’s identities have gotten tangled up in public, it’s easy to see why Pitt has embraced the mix-up rather than fight it.
