‘Heartstopper Forever’ Fans Are Asking: Where Is Olivia Colman and Who Plays Nick’s Mom Now?
Alice Oseman’s ‘Heartstopper‘ has always leaned on its supporting cast just as heavily as its central romance, and few of those characters have carried as much emotional weight as Nick Nelson’s mother. When the franchise wrapped its story with a feature film instead of a fourth season, longtime viewers immediately noticed a familiar face was missing from the family scenes.
Sarah Nelson has been part of Nick’s story since the very beginning, offering a steady, understanding presence during some of his most vulnerable moments. That included the now iconic Season 1 scene where Nick comes out to her as bisexual, a moment that went viral shortly after the show’s April 2022 debut and became one of the defining images of the entire series.
For the first two seasons, that role belonged to Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, whose warmth in the part made Sarah an instant fan favorite. In ‘Heartstopper Forever’, however, the character has been recast, with Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her work on ‘Motherland’ and ‘Ludwig’, stepping into the role instead.
Colman’s absence did not begin with the movie. She was already missing from Season 3, having confirmed a scheduling conflict at the time. Speaking to Forbes, she said she simply could not fit the third season into her schedule, adding that she felt awful about it and called her time on the show one of the most beautiful things she had ever been part of.
For that third season, the show worked around her absence by adjusting the story so Sarah simply did not appear on screen. That option was not available for the finale film, since Sarah’s relationship with Nick plays directly into some of the emotional struggles his character faces as the story closes out.
Writer and creator Alice Oseman addressed the decision directly through Netflix’s Tudum. Oseman explained that Sarah has always been one of the few people Nick can turn to during a crisis, and that leaving her out of this final chapter would have felt nonsensical given what Nick goes through in the film. Oseman said that since Colman was not able to join the project, the difficult call was made to recast the role entirely rather than write Sarah out of the story for good.

Oseman also made a point of thanking Colman for her contribution to the franchise, describing her performance across the first two seasons as beautiful and noting that it will live on with fans regardless of who takes over the part moving forward. Anna Maxwell Martin was brought on alongside Derek Jacobi, who joined the film in a previously undisclosed cameo role.
The recasting arrives as part of a broader wave of change for ‘Heartstopper Forever’, which shifts the franchise’s format entirely by closing the story with a film rather than another season. That structural choice gave the production room to dig into heavier material, following Nick and Charlie as they face the reality of growing apart while Nick prepares to leave for university.
What do you think about Olivia Colman being replaced as Sarah Nelson in ‘Heartstopper Forever’?
Colman has not ruled out a future return to the ‘Heartstopper’ universe altogether, having previously mentioned she would be open to appearing in a potential spinoff if her schedule allowed it. For now, fans will have to adjust to seeing Sarah Nelson through a new performance, one that creator Oseman has praised for capturing the character’s gentle, grounded energy in her scenes opposite Kit Connor.
