Helena Bonham Carter is no longer part of the upcoming fourth season of The White Lotus, according to a statement first reported by Deadline.

The actress, 59, had been attached to the new season during early production. However, HBO said the role she was set to play will now be changed and recast after issues emerged once filming began.

An HBO spokesperson explained the situation in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “The character Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” the spokesperson said.

The statement added that the creative team tried to adjust the role during production, but ultimately decided to rework it completely. The character will now be rewritten and recast in the coming weeks.

HBO also expressed disappointment about the change, noting that they still respect the actress and hope to work with her in the future. The network said that both the producers and creator Mike White were saddened by the outcome.

Production on season 4 had only just started when the decision was made. The new season is set in France and will be filmed across several locations, including the French Riviera. Reports say shooting will take place in cities such as Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and parts of Paris.

The series has built its reputation by filming in luxury resort settings around the world. Previous seasons have taken place in Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand, often using real high-end hotels as part of the story’s backdrop.

Even with the casting change, the new season is still moving forward with a large ensemble cast. It includes names such as Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, and others.

This kind of change is not unusual in big TV productions, especially early in filming. Still, it is surprising when a well-known actor exits so quickly. What do you think about this situation? Do you think recasting early is the right move, or should shows try to adjust roles instead? Share your thoughts in the comments.
