“Hell Answers to Me”: Doom’s Response to Thor in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Gave Us the Ultimate Chills
San Diego Comic Con has always been the place where Marvel Studios saves its biggest surprises, and this year’s Hall H panel for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ delivered exactly that kind of moment. With the film’s theatrical release still months away, fans inside the convention center got a taste of footage the rest of the world has not seen yet, and it left the room absolutely buzzing.
Kevin Feige, alongside directors Joe and Anthony Russo, brought out nearly two dozen cast members before rolling out exclusive footage that expanded significantly on the film’s already released trailer. What followed was a sequence that reframed just how dangerous Robert Downey Jr’s Victor Von Doom is shaping up to be.
The clip opened with Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, narrating Doom’s backstory, describing him as once being the smartest person in any room before tragedy transformed him into one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains. That framing set up a confrontation between Doom and Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, who directly asked Victor whether he was responsible for the devastation surrounding them.
From there, the footage shifted into a direct clash between Doom and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. According to multiple outlets covering the panel, Thor charges at Doom, wielding Stormbreaker, declaring that Doom will beg for hell long before he ever grants it. Doom responds by effortlessly stopping the weapon with just two fingers before blasting Thor backward with a burst of green energy.
That exchange builds toward the sequence’s most talked-about moment. Doom delivers his now viral response, coldly stating that hell answers to him, immediately before placing his hand on the ground and resurrecting a group of broken Sentinels, the mutant-hunting robots first introduced in the X-Men film franchise.
The footage also included appearances from Magneto, Cyclops, Gambit, Steve Rogers, Shang-Chi, and Shuri as Black Panther, underscoring just how massive this ensemble has become. A display case at the convention even showed off a defeated Sentinel with a damaged, wired-open head, hinting that the heroes eventually find a way to fight back against Doom’s mechanical army.
Adding to the chaos of the panel, attendees also witnessed a surprise cameo appearance from someone in a gray, denim-like Deadpool costume who sounded remarkably like Ryan Reynolds, joking about wanting to be included in the film. When later asked about it, the Russos confirmed the film has already wrapped shooting but that they remain open to additional photography, leaving fans to speculate about what that could mean for Deadpool’s potential involvement.

Beyond the Doomsday footage itself, Marvel used the panel to drop several other major announcements, including confirmation that ‘Black Panther 3’ will arrive December 15, 2028, with David Jonsson taking on the role of T’Challa’s son. The studio also confirmed Ryan Gosling as the new Ghost Rider, with Shawn Levy directing that project following ‘Secret Wars.’
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters December 18, fans will likely have to wait until D23 next month for their next substantial look at the film. For now, Doom’s chilling declaration has already cemented itself as one of the most talked about moments to come out of this year’s Comic Con.
