“Hell Answers to Me, for I Am Doom”: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Reveals Thor’s Brutal Defeat at D23

Marvel Studios has never been shy about saving its biggest villain reveals for the biggest possible stage, and this year’s D23 event once again proved exactly why. With the studio’s massive cross-franchise team-up film inching closer to its holiday release, fans in Anaheim were treated to a fresh look at just how formidable this new antagonist has become.

The buildup to that moment has been building since July, when Marvel first unveiled Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Victor von Doom during a Comic-Con panel that left fans stunned by the character’s icy composure. That first look established Doom as a genuine threat, someone capable of stopping Thor’s Stormbreaker with nothing but his fingers, but it left much of his motivations and full power set a mystery.

D23 finally filled in those gaps. The new trailer, introduced by leads Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell, opens with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm describing Victor as someone who “was always the smartest guy in every room” before everything he loved was taken from him, setting the stage for a devastating final confrontation between Doom and Thor himself.

That confrontation escalates quickly as Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards repeatedly presses Doom about his role in the catastrophic destruction surrounding them. Doom’s chilling response, “All of you have lived stolen lives, and now you must give them back,” plays over glimpses of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch, Professor X, and Magneto, hinting at just how many heroes are caught in the villain’s crosshairs.

The trailer builds toward its most talked-about moment when Thor, wielding Stormbreaker, promises Doom that he “will be begging for hell long before” the god of thunder is finished with him. Doom simply blocks the attack, blasts Thor away with a beam of green energy, and delivers the now-viral line that’s already dominating fan conversation: “Hell answers to me, for I am Doom.”

Doom follows that declaration by slamming his hand to the ground and raising a horde of fallen Sentinels, the classic mutant-hunting robots pulled directly from the X-Men’s comic book history. It’s a moment that visually ties together the film’s massive scope, blending Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts characters into a single, sprawling battle sequence.

According to those who saw the footage, this new trailer largely mirrors the one shown during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con the previous month, though it expands on Doom’s backstory and motivations in greater detail. The added context paints Doom less as a straightforward villain and more as a tragic, broken figure whose grief has curdled into something far more dangerous.

Directed once again by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ marks Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU following his original character’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The film also brings back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, with the ensemble cast serving as a bridge between Fox’s X-Men films and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe ahead of next year’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

Fan reaction to the new footage has been intense, with many already calling Doom’s closing line one of the coldest villain moments in MCU history. Between the Sentinels, the multiversal stakes, and Doom’s tragic backstory, D23 has only raised the bar for what fans expect from the film’s full theatrical release.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, bringing together one of the largest superhero ensembles ever assembled for a single MCU film.
