For nearly three decades, one actor has publicly carried a torch for a franchise most casual moviegoers barely understand outside of tabletop gaming circles. That devotion has slowly evolved from fanboy passion project into one of the most closely watched television adaptations in development, with every scrap of news treated like scripture by a fiercely dedicated fanbase.

Henry Cavill’s pursuit of bringing ‘Warhammer 40,000′ to the screen has been a years-long saga of its own, filled with false starts, studio shuffles, and long stretches of silence that left fans parsing every cryptic social media post for clues. That silence broke again this week, though not without some deliberate stage-setting first.

Cavill took to social media to confirm a wave of updates, acknowledging in his post that some news had gotten ahead of the team last week but that they wanted to wait for the dust to settle and some deals to finalize before addressing the rumors directly. Chief among those confirmations was the one fans had been waiting years to hear.

Henry Cavill’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Universe Expands With Yet Another Project Planned at Amazon

Cavill confirmed that he will star in Amazon’s live-action ‘Warhammer 40K’ series, ending one of the project’s biggest lingering mysteries, while also confirming his role as an executive producer working alongside writer-director Mike Flanagan on the series’ creative direction. As for exactly who he’ll be playing, the actor is keeping that detail locked down. “Who that character is, however, shall remain a secret for now!” Cavill wrote on Instagram.

The involvement of Flanagan, known for his work on acclaimed horror projects, marks a significant addition to the creative team. Cavill praised the collaboration on Instagram, writing, “As the fans will know, it’s an absolute monster to wrestle but Mike’s extraordinary talents are helping it take form wonderfully.” He added that alongside the team at Games Workshop, everyone is working tirelessly to bring fans “the best, most Warhammer universe that you could possibly imagine.”

Cavill’s Instagram announcement wasn’t limited to the live-action series alone. He also confirmed a Deathwatch-focused ‘Warhammer 40,000’ animated project as part of the “Secret Level” universe, developed alongside Dave Wilson and John Orloff. That animated project spotlights the elite Space Marines faction known as the Deathwatch.

The mystery surrounding Cavill’s live-action character has become something of a parlor game among longtime fans of the tabletop franchise. Given the sprawling scope of the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe and its army of iconic figures, speculation has run in every direction, from legendary Space Marines to god-like Primarchs central to the franchise’s mythology.

Amazon has left the door open to an entirely original character as well, a choice that would give the live-action series more creative flexibility as it takes shape. That flexibility may prove useful given how much creative ground the franchise’s decades of lore covers.

For a franchise adaptation that has spent years bouncing between announcements and long silences, this update finally gives fans concrete confirmation of what’s been rumored for months. With Flanagan now locked in as writer and United Artists onboard for production, the pieces are steadily falling into place, even if the biggest question of all, who exactly Cavill will play, remains locked away for now.

Who should Henry Cavill play in the live-action 'Warhammer 40,000' series?
