Henry Cavill’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Universe Expands With Yet Another Project Planned at Amazon

Henry Cavill’s journey into the world of ‘Warhammer 40,000’ is getting even bigger. Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are developing a new animated event series set in the popular sci-fi universe, with Cavill attached as an executive producer. The news was first reported exclusively by Variety.

The animated project is being developed alongside Amazon’s planned live-action ‘Warhammer 40,000’ series, which is also expected to star Cavill. While details about the live-action show remain limited, the new animated series gives fans another way to explore the massive universe filled with battles, futuristic armies, and alien threats.

The upcoming series will act as a spinoff of Amazon’s animated anthology series ‘Secret Level,’ which featured a ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode when it premiered in late 2024. Blur Studios, the company behind the animation for ‘Secret Level,’ will once again help bring the world to life, while Games Workshop, the creator of the tabletop game, will remain involved in the project.

Dave Wilson, who directed the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode of ‘Secret Level’ and worked as the show’s supervising director, will lead the new animated series as co-creator and director. He is developing the project alongside writer John Orloff, known for his work on series like ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Band of Brothers.’

The story details are being kept secret for now, but Variety reports that the series will focus on The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines trained to hunt down dangerous alien enemies. The group is one of the most respected forces in the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe, making them a natural choice for a large-scale animated story.

Wilson shared his excitement about expanding the world beyond the original ‘Secret Level’ episode. “‘Secret Level’ wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” Wilson said. He added that the reaction from fans to the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode showed how much audiences appreciated the effort put into respecting the source material.

“The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right,” Wilson explained. “This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.”

The filmmaker also revealed that telling a longer ‘Warhammer 40,000’ story has been a personal goal for years. “I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years,” Wilson said, while thanking Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for making the project possible.

Cavill’s involvement continues his close connection with the franchise. The actor has been a longtime fan of ‘Warhammer 40,000’ and has previously spoken about his excitement for bringing the universe to a wider audience. Alongside Cavill, producers on the animated series include Natalie Viscuso, Tim Miller, Dave Wilson, Roy Lee, and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop.

Amazon has been investing heavily in video game and fantasy adaptations in recent years. The company has found success with shows like ‘Fallout’ and is also developing other major projects based on popular franchises, including ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘God of War,’ ‘Mass Effect,’ and ‘Wolfenstein.’

With both animated and live-action projects in development, Amazon appears ready to turn ‘Warhammer 40,000’ into one of its biggest entertainment universes. For fans of the franchise, Cavill’s involvement could mark the beginning of a much larger era for the iconic sci-fi world.
