Hilary Duff recently returned to the late-night stage with a performance that quickly caught the attention of fans. On March 9, the 38-year-old singer appeared on The Tonight Show and performed her latest single Roommates.

Many viewers online described the moment as one of the most memorable performances of her recent comeback. The stage was designed to look like a bedroom, setting the mood for the song.

Duff started the performance, stretched across a leather chair, wearing a white dress that looked completely soaked. The gown was created by the London fashion label Di Petsa, a brand known for making outfits that appear wet even though no water is actually used.

Designer Dimitra Petsa explained the idea behind the look in a previous statement. “If you cry in public, you have to hide it. If you sweat in public, you have to hide it. If you breastfeed in public, you have to hide it,” she said.

“So what I wanted was to create a look that makes you look like you’re wet even though you’re not—to celebrate our wetness.” The performance was inspired by Duff’s music video for Roommates, which came out earlier this year in January.

In that video, she walks through an indoor rainstorm while wearing a bright yellow dress. For the Tonight Show appearance, the wet look came from special fabric design and stitching instead of real water.

Roommates is one of the key songs from her sixth studio album Luck … or Something, which was released on February 20. Duff worked on the track with her husband, Matthew Koma, and producer Brian Phillips.

The song talks about how long relationships can sometimes start to feel routine when daily life becomes busy. Duff spoke about the meaning of the song in a press statement. “Roommates is a song about when life is life-ing, babe,” she said.

“It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time—before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs.” During her Tonight Show interview with Jimmy Fallon, the singer also shared some fun childhood memories.

She talked about how much she admired the Olsen twins when she was younger. She even joined Fallon in a playful game called Sip and Sing, showing that she still keeps the same sense of humor fans remember from her early career.

The appearance comes during a big comeback year for Duff. She is getting ready to start her first global arena tour in nearly twenty years. The concert series, called The Lucky Me Tour, will begin in June and travel through cities in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Mexico.

Fans will also soon see a new documentary series directed by Sam Wrench. The project will follow Duff as she works on music again while balancing life as a mother of four. Along with her music career, Duff is still involved in television and business projects. Reports say she is also developing a new unscripted show focused on entrepreneurship.

For now, though, music is clearly her main focus again. Her new album has already entered the top ten on several charts since its release in February, showing that her return to pop is gaining strong support from fans.
