Few pop stars manage to juggle a tour, a new album and a family as smoothly as Hilary Duff has this year. Between touring and soundtrack work, the singer and actress has barely had a moment to slow down. That makes a well-earned beach getaway feel like a perfect reward.

Duff has also built a reputation for keeping things relaxed when she is off the clock, and her vacation style tends to reflect that. After a packed few weeks, a sunny stretch of Mexican coastline looks like exactly the reset she needed.

Photos taken on Oct. 8 show Duff enjoying her birthday celebration in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where she was spotted walking barefoot along the sand. She wore a bright yellow cut-out one-piece swimsuit, oversized sunglasses and a dark green baseball cap, with a purple bandana tucked into the back of it. Sunny and effortless, the look was perfectly suited to a day by the water.

She was seen chatting with friends near a beach club, and the outing was described as a belated girls trip. Mandy Moore was reportedly on the trip too, though she does not appear in the beach photos. The rest of the group has not been named.

Duff turned 39 on Sept. 28, which means this getaway arrived a little after the big day. Given her schedule, a delayed celebration makes sense, and a girls trip is a fitting way to make up for it. On her actual birthday, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit revisited her earlier cover shoot in South Caicos, a nice nod for a star who has said she feels better and better with age.

Duff and Moore have a long-running friendship, one that deepened when they were pregnant at the same time during the pandemic. Their husbands connected them, and Koma’s admiration for Taylor Goldsmith’s band Dawes later led to Goldsmith playing the first dance at Duff and Koma’s wedding.

The getaway follows one of the busiest stretches of Duff’s career. Her album ‘luck… or something’ arrived on Feb. 20, her first record in years, and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. On Oct. 2, she released the song “CATastrophe”, which she co-wrote with her husband, Matthew Koma, Madison Love and Brian Philips for the animated film ‘The Cat in the Hat’.

The movie opens in theaters on Nov. 6, and Koma and Philips also produced the track. Philips contributed to songs on her latest album as well, so the project keeps things in the family.

Duff’s trek, called The Lucky Me Tour, kicked off on June 22 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and spans the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The original schedule ran through Feb. 12 of next year, ending at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. Since then, she has added 32 new dates in the US, Europe and Latin America, extending the run through November of next year.

Her next show is scheduled for Oct. 20 in Auckland, followed by dates in Australia. Billboard will also honor her with its Outstanding Pop Tour of the Year award on Nov. 10, and she is set to perform on select dates of this year’s iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour. A few quiet days on the beach come at exactly the right time.

Beach photos of celebrities are a dime a dozen, but Duff’s vacation moments tend to feel more relatable than staged. She has always leaned into fun, bold color and low-key confidence, and the yellow swimsuit fits that mood perfectly. It also provides a nice contrast with the polished gowns she wore for recent appearances, including a white lace look at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Sept. 23.

Given how packed her calendar is, fans will likely cherish any glimpse of Duff taking a breather. The sun, the sand and the company of friends say plenty about where she is in life right now.
