Hollywood Just Had Its Biggest Weekend Ever, and It Took Two Movies to Pull It Off

The domestic box office has weathered plenty of ups and downs over the past several years, with studios and theater chains constantly chasing the kind of blockbuster energy that once felt like a guarantee every summer. Superhero fatigue, streaming competition, and a string of disappointing sequels had many in the industry wondering if marketplace-wide records like this were simply a thing of the past.

That skepticism didn’t last long. A combination of two very different tentpoles managed to do something no single release could have pulled off on its own, reshaping the conversation around what a modern theatrical weekend can actually generate.

According to Variety, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ and ‘The Odyssey‘ have fueled the biggest collective weekend in box office history, with roughly $430 million generated across all movies in the marketplace combined.

That total shatters the previous benchmark set during ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ opening weekend in 2019, which brought in $402 million collectively across the industry. It also leaves 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ ($314 million collectively) and 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ ($313 million collectively) far behind, marking just the second time in history that a single weekend has crossed the $400 million mark industry-wide.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ did the heavy lifting on its own, launching to a domestic debut of $355 million, the second-biggest opening weekend in North American history behind only ‘Endgame’s’ $357 million record. But the film didn’t reach this milestone in a vacuum, and ‘The Odyssey’ deserves plenty of credit for refusing to step aside.

Christopher Nolan’s epic pulled in another $51 million in its third weekend of release, a remarkably strong hold given that it was competing directly against one of the most anticipated superhero releases in years. Holdovers like Disney’s ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Moana,’ along with Universal’s ‘Minion & Monsters,’ also chipped in to help push the collective weekend total over the top.

Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends, Paul Dergarabedian, called the achievement a milestone that once felt permanently out of reach, noting in comments to Variety that this now stands as only the second $400 million-plus weekend in box office history.

There’s also a personal layer to the story that’s added extra buzz around the achievement. Tom Holland and Zendaya, who recently married, star together in both films powering this record-breaking weekend, with Holland leading ‘Brand New Day’ as Peter Parker while Zendaya appears in ‘The Odyssey’ as the goddess Athena. It’s an unusual bit of box office symmetry that has fans and industry watchers alike pointing out just how rare it is for two films starring the same real-life couple to collide at the top of the charts simultaneously.

The timing also underscores just how much ground the industry has recovered since Marvel’s post-‘Endgame’ slump, a stretch that saw underwhelming results from films like ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ and 2025’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ ‘Thunderbolts,’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ Few in Hollywood expected another weekend to come anywhere close to ‘Endgame’s’ original heights, let alone surpass them entirely.

With ‘Brand New Day’ still climbing toward the billion-dollar mark and ‘The Odyssey’ continuing its own historic run toward a possible $1.4 billion finish, this record-breaking weekend may end up being remembered as a turning point for the modern theatrical marketplace.
