Uwe Boll is returning to the zombie genre with a new project titled 23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead, described as an “unofficial sequel” to his 2003 film House of the Dead.

According to the report, Boll is set to begin principal photography on September 5 in Germany. The film will reunite original House of the Dead stars Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer, bringing them back into a zombie story more than two decades after the original release. While the new film shares characters and tone with the earlier movie, it is not officially connected to the Sega video game franchise due to rights issues.

The story of House of the Dead originally followed a group of students who travel to an island for a rave, only to discover it has been overrun by zombies. The survivors end up trapped in a house as they try to fight off the undead. The new film reportedly shifts the setting from a house to a castle, continuing the same type of survival horror style in a larger location.

Producer Michael Roesch described the idea in simple terms, saying, “So in a way, we’re upgrading from a house full of zombies to a castle full of zombies.”

Boll is directing the film from a script co-written with Lutz Geiger, while Roesch is also producing alongside Boris Wolffgardt. The project is being developed under Boll’s Event Film production company.

The report also notes that Boll’s announcement comes at a time when Paul W.S. Anderson is reportedly developing an official reboot of House of the Dead for Sega. Boll’s version appears to be an unofficial response to that project, with comments suggesting frustration over the direction of modern zombie adaptations.

In a statement quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Boll criticized the style of big-budget CGI-heavy horror films and explained his approach. “When I heard that Paul Anderson is rebooting House of the Dead, I immediately knew that it will be a soulless CGI orgy,” Boll said. “And I want to do a completely different zombie movie: Bloody, gory and handmade.”

The director is also developing other projects, including an official reboot of Alone in the Dark, another video game adaptation from his earlier career. He continues to work on multiple films, including the upcoming action thriller Citizen Vigilante and sequels to his 2024 film First Shift.

With 23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead, Boll appears to be revisiting one of his most recognizable films, this time expanding its world into a new setting while also positioning the project in contrast to competing franchise reboots.
