‘House of the Dragon’ Boss Reveals Wild New Game of Thrones Spin-Off Idea: “Targaryens Without Dragons”
The Game of Thrones universe could explore a very different side of House Targaryen. Ryan Condal, the creative mind behind House of the Dragon, has revealed an idea for a possible spin-off that would focus on the famous family without the creatures that made them unstoppable.
In an interview with Total Film, Condal discussed the huge storytelling possibilities still left inside George R.R. Martin’s world. While dragons have always been a major part of the Targaryen story, he believes there is an interesting future for a series where the family has to survive without them.
“I think there’s a real opportunity to see a story where the Targaryens… don’t have their dragons anymore. Where the Targaryens are still ruling, and like, how do you pursue rule? That seems like an interesting place,” Condal said.
The idea would offer a completely different look at the family. For hundreds of years, the Targaryens used their dragons as a symbol of power and fear. Their ability to control these massive creatures helped them conquer Westeros and hold onto the Iron Throne.
Without dragons, the family would have to depend on other skills. A show based on this idea could focus more on political battles, complicated alliances, betrayals and the struggle to keep control of the kingdom.
Condal’s idea is separate from the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which also explores a time when dragons are no longer part of everyday Targaryen life. That series follows young Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen and his adventures with Ser Duncan the Tall, one of the greatest knights in Westeros history.
However, a “Targaryens without dragons” story could explore a different period entirely. One possible setting would be the years after the Dance of the Dragons, when the Targaryen dynasty was weakened and the family’s greatest weapon was gone.
This era could show a side of Westeros that fans have rarely seen. Instead of focusing on giant battles and dragon fights, the story could follow rulers trying to keep their family’s power alive through strategy and political moves.
Condal also suggested that the world created by George R.R. Martin still has many stories waiting to be told. He compared the original Game of Thrones series to only a small part of what the universe can offer.
“The richness of this world is just that in Knight of the Seven Kingdoms… maybe Game of Thrones was the 1%,” Condal said.

The success of House of the Dragon has already shown that audiences are interested in exploring different parts of Westeros. While the original Game of Thrones focused on wars, kings and huge conflicts, future shows could take a slower approach and look at different families, time periods and styles of storytelling.
A series about the Targaryens after losing their dragons could bring a fresh feel to the franchise. Instead of powerful creatures deciding the fate of kingdoms, the focus would shift to human choices, ambition and the difficult decisions needed to stay on top.
For now, Condal’s idea remains only a possibility, but it shows that the Game of Thrones world still has plenty of room to grow.
