House of the Dragon Season 3 has arrived with a huge battle, major drama, and one of the show’s most emotional deaths yet. The premiere episode brought the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet to life, but while critics have praised the return, some viewers are not feeling the same excitement.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the new season currently holds a strong 95% Tomatometer score from critics based on 44 reviews. However, the audience reaction has been much more mixed, with the Popcornmeter sitting at 72% from more than 100 ratings.

The difference between critics and viewers has started a debate among fans. Many critics have praised the episode’s scale, performances, and darker tone, while some audience members feel the show is making questionable choices with the story and characters.

The Season 3 premiere shocked viewers with the death of Jace Velaryon, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s oldest son. His death during the Battle of the Gullet was one of the biggest moments in the episode, but it also became one of the main reasons some fans criticized the episode.

One Rotten Tomatoes user gave the episode a low rating and shared disappointment with the direction of the story.

“I didn’t even have hopes for this season, yet the show continues to disappoint not only me but the audience. Does every action in this show have to be an accident or misunderstanding? We saw it with Lucerys’s end, we saw it with the usurpation and now with Jace…. disappointing,” the viewer wrote.

Other viewers praised the premiere and felt it was a strong improvement compared with Season 2. However, even positive reviews often included complaints about certain creative choices.

A Rotten Tomatoes user gave the episode a mixed score, saying the premiere was better than the previous season but still had problems. The viewer questioned several story decisions, including the use of Sheepstealer during the battle and the handling of major characters.

“It was a good start to season 3 for the most part. Way better than season 2,” user wrote before adding that the Battle of the Gullet felt shorter than expected and that some moments did not have the impact fans hoped for.

The viewer also compared the battle to famous Game of Thrones moments and wanted more tension from the action scenes.

Not everyone was disappointed. Several fans praised the return of the series and the way the premiere handled the growing Targaryen conflict.

One Rotten Tomatoes user called it a strong comeback and praised the changes made from George R.R. Martin’s book.

“A very good return. The first episode of this third season manages an anxious tension from the first minute,” user wrote. He added that the show’s changes provided more context and helped show how the war was reaching a point of no return.

Another viewer simply described it as “The best show of the year.”

Still, some longtime fans remain unhappy with the adaptation choices. One user criticized the changes made from the source material and felt the series moved away from what made the original story special.

“A major death felt rushed and empty,” the viewer wrote, adding that the creative changes made the show feel weaker compared with the books.

The mixed audience response shows that House of the Dragon Season 3 has created a similar situation seen with many major fantasy shows. Critics may appreciate the production quality and storytelling, while fans often judge the series based on how closely it follows expectations.

For now, the show remains one of HBO’s biggest hits, but the divide between professional reviews and audience reactions suggests the new season will continue to be a major topic of discussion as the Targaryen war moves forward.
