‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Premiere Runtime Finally Revealed — And It’s Massive
The runtime for the first episode of House of the Dragon season 3 has now been confirmed. The information comes from HBO’s official schedule, which lists the episode airing on Sunday, June 21 from 9:00 p.m. to 10:12 p.m. ET. This means the episode will run for 72 minutes in total.
This runtime includes everything shown on HBO broadcasts, which usually covers the full episode, credits, and the short “Inside the Episode” segment at the end. Even with that included, it is still a long opening episode compared to most TV premieres.
For comparison, season 1 of House of the Dragon had a 65-minute premiere, while season 2 opened with a 58-minute episode. That makes the season 3 premiere the longest opening episode so far in the series.
Most episodes in the show usually fall between 50 and 65 minutes. Because of that, this new 72-minute runtime stands out. It suggests that the story in the premiere will take more time to set up major events and character moments before the rest of the season moves forward.
The longer runtime also makes sense because of the large events expected early in the season. One of the key conflicts building in the story is the Battle of the Gullet, which has been teased as a major moment in the ongoing war between the Blacks and the Greens. The extra time may help the show properly build tension and show more of what leads into that conflict.
The season 3 premiere is also one of the longest episodes in the entire series so far. It will be shorter than the season 2 finale, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” which ran for 84 minutes. It is also slightly shorter than season 2 episode 6, “Smallfolk,” which ran for 77 minutes.
Looking at other major battle episodes in the wider Game of Thrones universe, the comparison is interesting. The season 8 episode “The Long Night” ran for 82 minutes, which is still longer than the new premiere. However, the season 3 opener will be longer than episodes like “Blackwater” from season 2 at 55 minutes, “The Watchers on the Wall” from season 4 at 50 minutes, and “Battle of the Bastards” from season 6 at 59 minutes.
House of the Dragon season 3 will continue with fewer episodes overall. Like season 2, it is expected to have only eight episodes instead of the ten episodes used in season 1. That smaller episode count may be one reason why some episodes are longer, as the story has less time to unfold across the season.
Season 3 also marks a key point in the overall story. The show is now entering its penultimate season, meaning it will lead directly into the final season 4, which has already been confirmed by showrunner Ryan Condal.
The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, though some changes have been made in the adaptation. The source report also notes that Martin has publicly expressed concern over some of those changes in recent seasons.
House of the Dragon season 3 will premiere on June 21 on HBO and HBO Max, starting what is expected to be one of the most important chapters of the series so far.
