‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Sets Sizzling Summer 2026 Return
HBO has finally given fans an idea of when House of the Dragon will return. The third season of the Game of Thrones prequel is now expected to premiere in early summer 2026, most likely in June.
HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys recently explained that the new season would arrive “just outside” the 2026 Emmy eligibility period, which ends on May 31. That means the show won’t qualify for next year’s awards and will instead debut shortly after.
The long wait continues the show’s pattern of extended gaps between seasons. Season 1 launched in 2022, and Season 2 followed two years later in 2024. Now, fans face another two-year break before the third chapter lands.
Before that, however, viewers will get another trip to Westeros. The spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now scheduled for January 2026, after being delayed from its original 2025 release window. This will be the first time two separate Game of Thrones projects premiere in the same year.
Meanwhile, cast members are already teasing what’s ahead. Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, revealed that “the first two episodes [in Season 3] were supposed to be our finale last year.”
She added that the new season is “even bigger and more ferocious” than what fans have seen so far. Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy will also return as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen.
If HBO follows its usual summer scheduling, House of the Dragon Season 3 could arrive in June, similar to the release pattern of Season 2.
The wait for House of the Dragon might feel long, but HBO seems focused on making sure the show stays a big event each time it comes back. Having A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon drop in the same year could be exciting, though it might test whether fans want that much Game of Thrones content at once. Personally, I think both shows will help keep Westeros alive on screen for years.
