‘House of the Dragon’ Showrunner Explains the Finale’s Biggest Book Change & Why It Had to Be Done

The season three finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ made a major change to George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, and showrunner Ryan Condal has now explained why.

The biggest change comes during Rhaenyra Targaryen’s final scenes. After taking increasingly harsh steps to secure her position, Rhaenyra publicly tells the people of King’s Landing about the prophecy of the White Walkers and the promised hero who will supposedly save the world. That moment is not part of Martin’s book.

In ‘Fire & Blood’, there is no scene where Rhaenyra tells the people of King’s Landing about the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy. The prophecy itself also does not appear in the same way in the historical account of the Targaryen civil war. So why did the show add it?

Speaking during a press conference about season three, executive producer and showrunner Ryan Condal explained that the scene was designed to show how far Rhaenyra had changed. By this point, she is no longer simply trying to convince people that she deserves the throne. She has started presenting herself as someone with a special destiny.

Condal pointed out that Rhaenyra’s behavior is already described in the book as becoming increasingly unpopular and tyrannical. That gave the series room to show her transformation in a different way.

“Targaryens say crazy shit all the time,” Condal said, joking about how the people of King’s Landing might have reacted to Rhaenyra’s speech. He then explained that the writers wanted the scene to create a major shift in how Rhaenyra was viewed by the people around her.

For the ordinary people listening to her, her speech may not have sounded like a great revelation. Instead, it could have seemed like another powerful Targaryen making extraordinary claims about herself.

That was important because Rhaenyra had just ordered the execution of a religious leader who opposed her. Moments later, she was standing before the public and presenting herself as their future savior. The contrast was intentional.

The finale therefore marks a major turning point for Rhaenyra. Her struggle for power is no longer only about winning the war. It is also about how she sees herself and how much she believes in her own destiny.

Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, also spoke about the character’s changing relationship with power. D’Arcy said the story raises questions about “How do you manage the human ego in the political sphere?” That question could become even more important in the final season.

HBO has already confirmed that ‘House of the Dragon’ will return for a fourth and final season. According to Condal, fans can expect the story to expand even further, with new characters, dragons and locations.

“We’re very excited to get back in,” Condal said, promising what he believes will be “a very worthy final season.”

With Rhaenyra now more determined than ever and the Dance of the Dragons moving toward its final stage, season four could take the show even further away from Martin’s original history.
