‘House of the Dragon’ Showrunner Ryan Condal Reveals When the Series Will End
House of the Dragon is moving closer to its final chapter, and fans now have a clearer idea of how long the story will continue. According to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the series is planned to end after four seasons.
The news came during an interview where Condal spoke about the long-term direction of the show. He explained that while HBO has not made a formal announcement about the exact end point, his creative plan is already set. He said, “I can’t speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan.” This confirms that he is aiming to conclude the story with season 4.
House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. The series tells the story of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. This war is at the center of the show and has been building slowly across the seasons.
Condal explained that the story is designed to naturally reach its ending through this civil war. The later seasons will focus heavily on the final and most destructive part of the conflict. Season 3 and season 4 are expected to cover the collapse of the Targaryen family’s internal war and the consequences that follow.
The show has been one of HBO’s biggest successes in recent years. It continues the legacy of Game of Thrones and expands the world created by George R.R. Martin. Even though there has been strong collaboration between Martin and the production team in the past, recent reports suggest that their relationship has become more complicated during later seasons.
Martin has publicly expressed concerns about changes made in the adaptation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “I hired Ryan, I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought.”
He also described how the collaboration changed over time, adding, “Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me.” These comments showed that there has been disagreement about how closely the show should follow the books.

Despite these tensions, Condal has continued to lead the series forward. He has said before that adapting the story for television requires changes because of production limits and storytelling structure. He has also said he wants to stay focused on finishing the story for the cast and crew.
HBO has not officially confirmed that season 4 will be the final season, but Condal’s comments strongly suggest that the creative roadmap is already locked in. If that plan stays the same, season 3 and season 4 will bring the Dance of the Dragons to its conclusion.
Season 3 of House of the Dragon is set to release on June 21. It will continue building toward the final stages of the war, where major characters and rival factions push closer to the endgame.
For now, fans are waiting to see how the story unfolds, but the direction is now clearer than ever. The series is heading toward a four-season structure, with its final chapter already in sight according to the show’s own creator.
