How Egg From ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Connects To Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Bloodline

Fans diving into HBO’s newest Westeros series have been hit with one major question ever since the show’s central twist landed. Just how does the unassuming squire known as Egg tie back to the Targaryen dynasty fans first watched tear itself apart in ‘House of the Dragon‘.

The answer involves a sprawling family tree, a few generations of Targaryen kings, and a connection that stretches all the way from Rhaenyra Targaryen to Daenerys herself.

Egg Is Revealed As A Targaryen In Disguise

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 1, Episode 3, titled “The Squire,” confirms what eagle eyed viewers had already started suspecting. The episode gives up the pretense by revealing the title character’s true identity as Aegon Targaryen. Subtle hints had been dropped earlier in the season, including his accent, his knowledge of Westeros, and his reaction to seeing the Targaryens, but Dunk himself remained completely unaware.

The reveal arrives once Prince Aerion Targaryen is on the verge of killing Dunk. According to the books the show is based on, Egg is the nickname for young Aegon Targaryen, who later squired for Ser Duncan the Tall and eventually became the fifteenth Targaryen to sit the Iron Throne.

He earned the unflattering nickname Aegon the Unlikely, given that he was the fourth son of a fourth son and never expected to rule.

In the show, Egg is the fourth and youngest son of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Lady Dyanna Dayne, making him the brother of Daeron, Aerion, and Aemon Targaryen. That sibling list matters a lot once fans start tracing the family tree backward toward ‘House of the Dragon’.

Tracing The Targaryen Family Tree Back To Rhaenyra

The line connecting Egg to Rhaenyra runs through several generations of Targaryen rulers. Starting with Rhaenyra, the bloodline passes through Viserys II, Aegon IV, Daeron II, and Maekar I before finally reaching Aegon V, who is Egg. That makes Rhaenyra his great great great grandmother, a fact multiple outlets covering the show have confirmed independently.

The line specifically descends through Rhaenyra’s relationship with Daemon Targaryen. Egg descended from Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son, Viserys II Targaryen, putting him on Rhaenyra’s side of the family rather than Alicent Hightower’s. That distinction is significant given how brutal the succession war between those two branches became in ‘House of the Dragon’.

It’s worth noting that the throne didn’t pass directly from Rhaenyra to her son right away. Following the Dance of the Dragons, the bloodline continued from Rhaenyra and Daemon through their son Aegon the Younger, who became Aegon III, with the throne eventually passing to his sibling Viserys II. From there, the line moves cleanly down to Egg’s father.

Egg’s grandfather, King Daeron II, is actually ruling Westeros during the events of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ even though he never appears onscreen. Daeron II doesn’t actually appear in the spinoff or the novella it’s based on, but two of his sons play prominent roles in Dunk’s story, including Egg’s father, Maekar I.

What This Means For Daenerys And Jon Snow

The family tree doesn’t stop with Rhaenyra. It extends forward too, linking Egg directly to characters audiences already know from the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series. Egg’s son, King Jaehaerys II Targaryen, fathered King Aerys II, better known as the Mad King, who was eventually killed by Jaime Lannister and succeeded by King Robert Baratheon.

That makes Egg’s relationship to Daenerys remarkably close by Targaryen standards. Since the Mad King was Daenerys Targaryen’s father, Egg becomes Daenerys’ great grandfather. It also means the bloodline that once fought so viciously over the Iron Throne in ‘House of the Dragon’ eventually produces the Dragon Queen herself.

The connections multiply from there. Because Daenerys and Viserys are both the Mad King’s children, fans can draw a direct line from Rhaenyra to Egg, and then from Egg to Daenerys. And since Daenerys and Jon Snow’s father Rhaegar are siblings, Egg ends up being Rhaegar’s great grandfather as well, which makes Jon his great great grandson.

There’s also a more personal crossover that longtime ‘Game of Thrones’ fans will recognize instantly. Aemon Targaryen, the kindly maester at Castle Black, is actually Egg’s older brother, and since Aemon lives past 100 years old, he’s one of the few characters who could realistically appear in both series. Aemon’s bond with Jon Snow at the Wall suddenly carries a lot more weight once you realize whose brother he actually is.

Why The Reveal Hits So Hard For Longtime Fans

Part of what makes Egg’s identity reveal land so effectively is how the show builds toward it without spelling things out too early. The mystery surrounding his bald head, his ring, and his clipped, careful way of speaking around Dunk all pay off the moment Aerion nearly kills his sworn brother in arms.

There’s also something poignant about watching this story unfold so soon after ‘House of the Dragon’ showed audiences exactly how costly the Targaryen civil war was. Seeing the family rebuild generations later, with Egg eventually becoming a king nobody expected, adds a layer of dramatic irony for viewers who already know where this bloodline ends up.

The timeline itself adds another wrinkle to the story. ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is set almost 80 years after ‘House of the Dragon’ and roughly 90 years before ‘Game of Thrones,’ placing Egg’s journey squarely in the middle of the Targaryen dynasty’s long and complicated history.

Knowing that Egg eventually becomes Daenerys’ great grandfather and Jon Snow’s great great grandfather changes how fans will likely watch the rest of his arc, especially with prophecy already hinting at fire and tragedy in his future. Did the reveal of Egg’s true Targaryen identity catch you off guard, or had the clues already given it away before episode three confirmed it?
