‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ Sequel Is Officially Happening, and Kate Hudson Is Bringing McConaughey Along for the Ride
Early 2000s rom-coms have quietly become one of Hollywood’s most reliable nostalgia plays, with studios increasingly betting that audiences who grew up on these films will show up for a grown-up reunion. From ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ to a wave of other legacy sequels, the genre has found a second life by leaning directly into that built-in fondness.
That trend now appears to be reaching one of the most beloved romantic comedies of the era. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s chemistry in the 2003 original became the kind of cultural touchstone that fans have spent years hoping might someday get a follow-up, with both stars occasionally teasing the possibility without ever fully committing.
That wait may finally be over. According to Variety, Paramount is developing a sequel to ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,’ with Hudson herself attached to produce the project, and the studio’s intention is to bring both Hudson and McConaughey back to reprise their roles as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry.
The project remains in the early stages of development, according to Variety’s reporting, with the cast and several key creative roles still unselected at this point. Stacey Sher, whose extensive producing credits include “Pulp Fiction,” “Erin Brockovich,” and “Django Unchained,” is set to produce alongside Hudson through her Shiny Penny banner. A screenwriter has yet to be attached, meaning casting decisions will ultimately hinge on whatever direction the finished script takes.
This isn’t the first time Hudson has floated the idea of revisiting Andie Anderson. During a 2024 appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” Hudson said she and McConaughey were both totally open to a sequel, though she stressed that the only thing that would ultimately matter is whether the two of them liked the script enough to sign on. As recently as January of this year, she confirmed the project still wasn’t officially in development, even while reiterating that she and McConaughey remained interested if the right material came together.
McConaughey has echoed similar sentiments over the years, previously telling E!’s Daily Pop that the original felt perfectly set up for a sequel and calling it one of the strongest entries in the romantic comedy genre. Beyond the professional interest, the two actors have also spoken fondly about their onscreen chemistry, joking during a 2023 Instagram Live marking the film’s 20th anniversary about how naturally they worked together and how much freedom they felt performing alongside one another.
The original film followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson as she set out to intentionally sabotage a relationship for a story assignment, only to fall for advertising executive Benjamin Barry, who was simultaneously betting his boss that he could make any woman fall for him within the same ten-day window. Directed by Donald Petrie, the film grossed nearly $180 million worldwide against a modest $50 million budget, cementing its place as one of the defining rom-coms of its era.

Plot details for the sequel remain completely under wraps for now, and there’s no confirmation yet on how closely it will follow the tone or structure of the original. Given how much affection still surrounds the first film more than two decades later, Paramount appears confident there’s a genuine audience ready to see where Andie and Benjamin’s story goes next.
