That story involves Anthony Mackie, who has spent over a decade building his Marvel legacy from Sam Wilson’s introduction as Falcon all the way through his current run as the new Captain America. For Mackie, whose transition into the Captain America mantle following Chris Evans’ exit from the role has occasionally drawn mixed reactions from parts of the fandom, that kind of validation from an actor as respected as McKellen clearly meant a great deal. McKellen’s return as Magneto carries plenty of weight of its own, given that he originated the role all the way back in 2000’s ‘X-Men’ and has remained one of the character’s most iconic on-screen portrayals ever since. Mackie first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ steadily building toward his current position as the franchise’s leading man. Having someone like McKellen, whose own Marvel legacy predates the entire modern MCU by over a decade, offer that kind of blessing feels like a genuinely full-circle moment for a character who has come a long way from his early days as Falcon.
