IMDb Just Gave Digital Creators a Seat at the Table for the First Time Ever
For nearly 36 years, IMDb has functioned as the definitive online directory for movies and television, serving as the go-to reference point for tracking actors, directors, and industry professionals across traditional entertainment. That singular focus has remained largely unchanged even as the broader media landscape shifted dramatically around it.
That landscape shift has been impossible to ignore lately, with streamers, YouTubers, and social media personalities increasingly blurring the lines between internet fame and traditional Hollywood success. Despite that growing overlap, digital creators have historically had no formal way to represent their work within IMDb’s established professional framework, even when their content reached audiences far larger than many traditional television or film projects.
That’s now changing. IMDb is adding “Digital Creator” as a brand-new professional category on both IMDb and IMDbPro, giving internet content creators a dedicated way to represent their work and connect with audiences, industry peers, and potential employers, according to the company.
The Digital Creator designation comes with several sub-professions designed to further specify a creator’s particular focus, including Streamer, Vlogger, Video Essayist, Video Creator, Gaming Creator, and Influencer. Creators can also list multiple professions on a single profile, meaning someone who works both as a digital creator and a traditional actor can represent the full scope of their career in one unified place.
Notably, no existing film or television credits are required to establish a profile under this new category, a significant departure from IMDb’s historically credit-based structure. The Digital Creator option is currently available as a professional category exclusively for IMDbPro Premium members.
Nikki Santoro, CEO of IMDb, explained the reasoning behind the expansion in a statement shared with Variety. She said IMDbPro has long empowered entertainment professionals with tools to get discovered, build their reputation, and advance their careers, and that digital creators and their representatives need that same infrastructure, while producers, casting directors, studio executives, and brand partners need a reliable way to find them.
That framing positions the update less as a symbolic gesture and more as a practical bridge between two industries that have increasingly started overlapping in recent years. Many content creators have already found their way onto IMDb when appearing in specific film or television projects, but this marks the first time the platform has formally recognized digital creation itself as a standalone profession.
IMDb’s rollout of the Digital Creator category will be formally celebrated at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the company is hosting an invite-only industry cocktail party on September 14. That event is expected to mark the official debut of the new category while also spotlighting IMDb’s expanding collaboration with Canadian entertainment guilds.
Choosing TIFF as the launch venue underscores how seriously IMDb appears to be treating this shift, positioning the update alongside one of the film industry’s most prominent annual gatherings rather than rolling it out quietly through a routine platform update.
This move arrives at a moment when the creator economy has become impossible for traditional entertainment infrastructure to ignore. Recent survey data has shown that more than half of young people now say they want to grow up to become influencers, a striking shift in career aspirations that underscores just how mainstream digital content creation has become.
By formally recognizing these roles, IMDb appears to be acknowledging that the traditional boundaries separating Hollywood professionals from internet-born talent have effectively dissolved. As the company has indicated plans to continue expanding its professional categories based on industry feedback, this launch may just be the first step in a broader reimagining of what counts as entertainment industry work.
