On a recent episode of his Armchair Expert podcast during the “Fact Check” segment, Shepard revealed that while he went all out for his daughters, Kristen Bell and his mother were left with a quieter celebration than expected.

The actor explained that he devoted nearly all his energy to making the day special for his 12-year-old Lincoln and 11-year-old Delta. “I put several hours into my Valentines,” Shepard said, describing how he inflated heart-shaped pool floaties and created detailed handmade cards for the girls.

This intense focus on fatherhood meant that he essentially ran out of time and resources for the adults. Shepard also mentioned that his mother, Laura Labo, was visiting for the weekend, but even she didn’t get the full Valentine’s experience.

“After 51 years of my mom being my Valentine, I hit a limit with my bandwidth,” he joked, hinting that Bell’s celebration wasn’t as elaborate as she might have hoped. Despite the situation, Shepard believes both his mother and his wife understood his intentions.

He noted that they appreciated the attention he gave to nurturing a special bond with his daughters. Co-host Monica Padman chimed in during the podcast, suggesting that for Bell, watching Shepard be such a devoted father is actually a meaningful Valentine’s gift in itself.

Bell has previously expressed similar thoughts, often praising Shepard for his commitment to personal growth and to their family. She sees their relationship as a partnership built on evolution and mutual support rather than keeping score.
