‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Tracks for August’s Biggest 2026 Box Office Opening
Horror franchises don’t often get a sixth chapter, let alone one still capable of generating real box office buzz. Yet here we are, with the Insidious series proving it still has plenty of gas left in the tank as it heads into its latest theatrical outing.
The franchise has quietly become one of horror’s most dependable earners since James Wan and Leigh Whannell launched it back in 2010 with a modest $1.5 million budget. Five sequels later, the series has weathered ups and downs at the box office, but its most recent installment reignited momentum in a way few expected.
Now, early tracking suggests that momentum is carrying straight into the next chapter. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further‘ is projected to open between $26 million and $34 million domestically, positioning it as the biggest August release of 2026 and putting it on par with 2023’s franchise-best debut.
That comparison isn’t a coincidence. ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ the film’s direct predecessor, opened to $33 million domestically in 2023 before going on to become the highest-grossing entry in franchise history at $189 million worldwide. Early pre-sales for ‘Out of the Further’ are reportedly tracking right in line with that number, giving Sony reason to feel confident heading into release weekend.
Directed by Jacob Chase, making his first entry into the series, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ continues the story following the events of ‘The Red Door.’ The film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, with franchise veteran Lin Shaye returning once again as Elise Rainier, the psychic medium who has anchored the series since its earliest chapters.
Behind the camera, the film maintains its usual pedigree, produced by Jason Blum, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Oren Peli, the same team responsible for turning the original ‘Insidious’ into a sleeper hit that outgrossed its tiny budget more than 60 times over. That kind of consistency has helped the franchise avoid the steep declines that often plague long-running horror series.
The numbers back that up. ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ still holds the franchise’s biggest opening weekend at $40.3 million in 2013, while ‘The Last Key’ opened to $29.5 million in 2018. Even ‘Chapter 3,’ the softest performer in the lineup, still managed a $22.6 million debut back in 2015.
Tracking data from The Quorum, published by Puck, has placed ‘Out of the Further’ among the strongest titles on its board heading into release, registering 47% awareness and 48% interest just over two weeks before opening. Those numbers rank second only to Zach Cregger’s upcoming ‘Resident Evil,’ which doesn’t hit theaters until September, and lead every other film actually opening in August.
There’s a wrinkle worth watching, though. Despite sitting near the top of the board, ‘Out of the Further’ has reportedly been one of the only high-tracking titles trending slightly downward over the past two tracking cycles, giving it one more chart cycle to stabilize before opening weekend numbers settle the question for good.
The film also arrives with a notable challenge waiting at the top of the box office. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has dominated the charts for weeks, and depending on how strong the Insidious debut lands, it could either finally dethrone Tom Holland’s blockbuster or fall just short of doing so.
Whatever happens on opening weekend, the tracking numbers alone confirm that horror fans haven’t lost their appetite for this particular corner of the genre. With Lin Shaye back in the fold and a fresh director bringing new sensibilities to the mythology, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ looks positioned to close out the summer with one of its strongest showings yet.
