Intimacy coordinators have become essential on modern film and TV sets, helping actors navigate scenes that involve physical vulnerability. Their job is to make sure performers feel safe, respected, and fully aware of what’s expected.

They work closely with directors to bring the creative vision to life while maintaining strict professional boundaries. Brooke M. Haney, a well-known intimacy coordinator who has worked on shows like Elsbeth, Mayor of Kingstown, and Harlem, recently explained how these scenes are managed.

Speaking to US Weekly, Haney said that film sets are highly technical and professional, which usually keeps awkward moments to a minimum. “Here’s the thing – this isn’t actually very common,” Haney said.

Haney described the reality of filming intimate scenes: “With the lights bearing down, microphones, a couple of cameras in your face, director, DP, and other necessary crew watching on monitors, it’s just not that sexy.”

Despite the professional environment, human bodies can sometimes react in ways actors can’t control. Haney explained, “However, sometimes bodies have physiological responses that are outside of our control.”

To handle these situations, coordinators use simple techniques to redirect blood flow and help actors reset. Haney shared, “When that does happen, I tell the actor to do a few push-ups or some jumping jacks.

That moves the blood to a different location, and we’re all good.” These practices, often called “closure techniques,” help performers stay comfortable and separate their personal feelings from the character they are portraying.

Actors like Jeremy Renner, who stars as Mike McLusky in Mayor of Kingstown, have worked closely with coordinators to maintain a professional set environment. After a serious accident in 2023, Renner made a celebrated return to acting and played a major role in the production of the show’s fourth season.

He also recently appeared in the murder mystery sequel Wake Up Dead Man and continues to be a key figure in major studio projects. Elsbeth, another show supported by Haney, stars Carrie Preston as a brilliant, quirky attorney.

The series has earned praise for its unique procedural format, strong ensemble performances, and clever writing. As productions like Mayor of Kingstown and Elsbeth expand, intimacy coordination has become a standard practice, ensuring that even the most sensitive scenes are filmed safely and professionally.

Haney’s work highlights how modern sets prioritize both safety and storytelling, giving actors the confidence to perform at their best without any unnecessary awkwardness or discomfort.
