Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the movie is expected to bring together heroes from across multiple Marvel franchises as the Multiverse Saga moves toward its conclusion.
Marvel has already confirmed a massive ensemble cast, making the film one of the studio’s most ambitious crossover projects to date.
The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, though recent rumors suggest Marvel may be considering an earlier release date. If the reports are accurate, the move would help the studio avoid direct competition with Dune: Part Three and secure valuable IMAX screens during its opening week.

The report comes from entertainment commentator John Campea, who discussed the possibility on The John Campea Show. According to Campea, Marvel executives have already talked internally about moving the film’s release date from December 18, 2026, to December 11, 2026. He stressed that nothing has been officially announced, but said, “discussions have taken place.”
If the rumor turns out to be true, it would mark another shift for the highly anticipated Marvel film. Avengers: Doomsday has already been delayed several times. It was originally scheduled for May 2025 before being pushed back because of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Marvel later delayed it again to December 18, 2026, to give the production more time.
That December release created another challenge. Warner Bros. has already scheduled Dune: Part 3 for the exact same day. The matchup quickly became one of the biggest talking points among movie fans, with many jokingly calling the double release “Dunesday” as a reference to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon that saw Barbie and Oppenheimer open together in 2023.
Some fans have even planned to watch both movies on opening day. However, releasing on the same weekend could create problems beyond simple box office competition.
One of the biggest issues involves IMAX screens. According to reports referenced by Campea, Warner Bros. has secured an exclusive three-week IMAX window for Dune: Part 3 in the United States. That would leave Avengers: Doomsday without access to domestic IMAX theaters during its opening weekend, something that could significantly affect ticket sales.
Moving the film forward by one week would solve much of that problem. It would give Marvel at least one full week of exclusive IMAX screenings before Dune: Part 3 arrives. That means fans who want the premium viewing experience would have the chance to see Avengers: Doomsday on IMAX screens before they switch over to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel.
Campea also pointed out another reason the earlier date makes sense. Sony recently moved the next Jumanji movie from December 11 to Christmas Day, leaving that weekend without a major blockbuster. That creates an opening Marvel could potentially take advantage of if it decides to make the move.
The rumor has also been discussed by other entertainment outlets, including The Wrap and The Big Picture Podcast, which have mentioned the possibility of Marvel reconsidering the film’s release schedule. Still, there has been no official confirmation from Marvel Studios or Disney.
For now, fans should treat the report as speculation rather than fact. Marvel is known for keeping major announcements private until plans are finalized, so there is no guarantee that a date change will actually happen.
