Is ‘Constantine 2’ Finally Happening? The Movie Just Got a Big Development Update

Although little under two decades have passed, Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine might finally be returning to the big screen! In November 2012, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro signed a deal to create a Justice League Dark film centered around DC Comics’ supernatural characters, including John Constantine. In November 2020, actor Peter Stormare hinted at a sequel being “in the works” via an Instagram post. However, neither Warner Bros. representatives nor Reeves immediately confirmed this.

Then, back in 2023, Francis Lawrence confirmed that he was working on some ideas for the iconic movie with Keanu Reeves but every time they would come up with something concrete the regime at DC studio would change.

“But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit. So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.

This is pretty much old news, and the SAG-AFTRA strike lasted for three months and was resolved more than 4 months ago, so it was weird that there was no news regarding the movie, until now. According to Production Weekly ‘Constantine 2’ has officially entered development, which means that Lawrence is delivering on his promise.

The only catch is, that we can’t be 100 % sure that this is actually ‘Constantine 2’ since the movie is not listed as such. There is a lot of wondering now whether the upcoming movie will be part of the Elseworlds label like ‘The Batman’ or part of the mainline DCU helmed by James Gunn.

There is evidence to support both theories. Lawrence has apparently been working on the sequel long before DCU was a thing, but there are also speculations that the character was supposed to be introduced to the DCU in ‘Swamp Thing’ first.

The fandom is however hoping that ‘Constantine’ will be rebooted with Keanu Reeves omitted from the movie for the most part, but for now, it’s almost 100 % guaranteed that we are working with a Reeves-led sequel here, based on their previous statements in the past and knowing that the movie was planned for a long time now.
