Is Joe Found in ‘Lioness’ Season 3? Here’s Where the Search Stands

Kidnapping storylines live or die by their pacing, and few shows have stretched that tension quite as deliberately as Taylor Sheridan’s “Lioness” has this season. What began as a triumphant CIA operation in Ukraine has spiraled into one of the show’s most nerve-wracking arcs yet, leaving fans anxiously refreshing their feeds every Sunday night for answers.

Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara has anchored “Lioness” since its debut as the fearless station chief of the CIA’s covert Lioness program. That leadership has come at a steep personal cost this season, after Joe was violently abducted from her Fairfax, Virginia, neighborhood following a mission to capture high-ranking Russian intelligence officer Aleksi Yurimov.

As of the most recent episode, Season 3, Episode 4, titled “Murder Hornets,” Joe still has not been found. Her Russian captors have remained frustratingly ahead of the CIA’s rescue efforts at nearly every turn, transferring her between locations and stripping her tracking device before her team can catch up.

The search reached a critical breaking point in Episode 4. Joe’s captors, led by a senior SVR case officer named Renat, moved her from a safe house to an airplane hangar in Baltimore, hoping to fly her out of the country before the CIA could intervene.

Joe’s quick reaction force, led by Kyle McManus, arrived at the hangar only minutes after the Russians had already escaped aboard a private jet. Anticipating her team would come looking, Joe deliberately cut herself with a leather strap to leave behind a blood trail, giving Kyle and the rest of the unit just enough evidence to confirm she’d been there and push the search forward.

That effort came at a cost. Furious over missing the extraction window, Kyle killed one of the Russian operatives left behind and forced another to reveal the fleeing jet’s tail number, a decision that violated the team’s official rules of engagement and sparked internal conflict among the group.

With the tail number in hand, Joe’s team identified the aircraft as a Challenger 300, capable of traveling roughly 3,400 nautical miles. That range puts a massive swath of potential destinations in play, and matters are made worse by the fact that the plane’s transponder has been disabled and its pilots are flying below 18,000 feet, essentially making it invisible to standard tracking methods.

Army commander Amber Whalen has been assisting in the search, working alongside CIA Deputy Director Kaitlyn Meade to coordinate a response. Kaitlyn’s instructions for what happens if the plane is located carry life-or-death stakes: if the aircraft is found in U.S. airspace, military jets will attempt to force it to land, but if it’s discovered in international airspace, they’ve been authorized to engage the plane entirely, a directive that could mean Joe’s death right alongside her captors.

By the end of Episode 4, Joe still hadn’t been located, and Kaitlyn made a difficult visit to Joe’s husband, Neal, to prepare him for what might come next. She laid out three distinct possible outcomes for Joe’s fate, ranging from a successful rescue to a prolonged prisoner exchange to the grim possibility that she never comes home, without confirming which scenario is most likely.

Adding another layer of doubt to the situation, CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield has floated a darker theory about the motive behind Joe’s kidnapping entirely. Rather than a straightforward prisoner exchange for Yurimov, Byron believes Russia may be seeking revenge and maximum embarrassment for the United States, potentially even handing Joe over to a proxy nation for a public trial over her past covert operations.

With Joe’s fate still very much up in the air heading into the season’s next chapter, “Lioness” has kept its cards close throughout this entire arc, refusing to tip its hand on whether a rescue, a trade or something far worse awaits its lead character. For now, the search continues, and fans will have to keep tuning in weekly on Paramount+ to find out whether Joe makes it home alive.
