Is Paula Really Dead After That Gunshot in the Woods on ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’?
Apple TV’s ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed‘ has spent its entire first season toying with viewers, and the ending of episode nine may be the biggest gut punch yet. The show cuts away right as a gun goes off in the woods outside a golf club, leaving Paula’s fate completely up in the air heading into the finale.
For a series that started as a dark comedy about a fact checker’s messy custody battle, the stakes have escalated into something much darker. Fans are now left wondering whether Paula, the woman at the center of this entire conspiracy, actually survives the episode.
What Happens to Paula Near the End of Episode 9
Paula spends the episode racing toward a leadership retreat at Bedford Hills Golf Club after connecting the dots on the mysterious Souter Group. Since she doesn’t have proper identification to get into the retreat, she tries to sneak in through the woods surrounding the club. That decision puts her directly in the path of someone who has been hunting her for episodes.
The woman following her with a gun is Jennifer, the same person who once posed as Paula’s lawyer while she was in prison and who later attacked Rudy to grab a burner phone.
Jennifer has reportedly been instructed by her boss to take Paula down, and by this point in the episode her intentions are unmistakable. It’s a chilling escalation for a character who spent most of the season operating from the shadows.
Before Jennifer can actually pull the trigger, Detective Baxter arrives and orders her to drop the weapon. Then, without warning, the episode cuts straight to the sound of a gunshot, and the screen goes dark before anyone finds out who actually fired it.
Who Might Have Actually Fired the Gun
The ambiguity around that final gunshot is clearly the hook heading into the season finale, and there are a handful of credible theories floating around. One possibility is that Jennifer fired at Paula and missed, deciding she might as well finish the job before getting caught by a police officer. Another theory suggests Baxter himself pulled the trigger after Jennifer refused to lower her weapon.
There’s also a darker read on the situation, one where Jennifer turns the gun on the detective instead in order to escape the scene entirely. Whatever the answer turns out to be, even if Jennifer manages to kill Baxter, it seems unlikely that she and the people she works for will get away with everything they’ve done. That’s a small comfort for anyone bracing for the worst.
Why Jennifer Has Been Hunting Paula All Season
Jennifer’s involvement in Paula’s life goes back much further than this single confrontation in the woods. She’s believed to be the same woman who posed as Paula’s lawyer, and through that scheme the people running this operation learned everything Paula had gathered against them. That betrayal hit especially hard, since Paula thought she’d finally found someone in her corner.
Jennifer appears to be part of a larger contract killer network working for a man named Brian, who has been directing efforts to silence Paula since she stumbled into evidence connecting Trevor’s death to a much bigger conspiracy.

The character has functioned less like a typical hitwoman and more like a persistent shadow, always one step behind Paula’s own investigation.
Her presence in the finale build up raises the stakes considerably, since she’s shown throughout the season that she’s willing to hurt anyone standing between her and completing the job. That includes Rudy, who ended up with a head injury after Jennifer broke into his apartment looking for the stolen burner phone.
Rudy and Geri Race to Help Paula Before It’s Too Late
While Paula is being hunted in the woods, Rudy and Geri are finally getting their act together after doubting her for most of the season. Rudy had stolen the burner phone hoping to figure out what Geri had discovered, and turning it on while stoned unintentionally handed Dennis’ handler an easy way to track him down. That mistake nearly cost him far more than a head injury.
Once Rudy realizes just how much danger Paula is actually in, he pushes Geri to help track down the information that could finally clear her name. Geri’s discovery of a name tied to Yale University administration becomes a key thread the two of them are still trying to untangle as the season barrels toward its finale.
Their late arc redemption matters a lot for how the finale is likely to play out. If Paula does survive that gunshot, it will almost certainly be because Rudy and Geri finally started acting on the information they’d been sitting on for weeks.
What a Season 2 Might Mean for Paula’s Story
‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ has built out a sprawling conspiracy involving a corporate syndicate, a custody battle, and now a life or death cliffhanger, all of which leaves plenty of runway for another season. Whether or not Paula survives this specific gunshot, the larger mystery around the Souter Group and the people pulling Jennifer’s strings feels far from resolved.
Tatiana Maslany’s performance has carried the show through its tonal shifts between dark comedy and genuine thriller stakes, and the finale will need to deliver on everything set up across these nine episodes. Given how many loose threads remain, from Dennis’ fate to the custody case with Hazel, there’s a strong case for Paula’s story continuing well beyond this current arc.
For now, all anyone can do is wait and see whether the season finale reveals Paula walking away from those woods or whether Jennifer finally succeeds in silencing her for good. Do you think Paula survives that gunshot, or has Jennifer finally caught up with her for good?
