Is Sony Ready to Sell Its Spider-Man Rights to Disney and Marvel?

Spider-Man’s journey in the MCU has been more complex than any other superhero, mainly because Sony, not Marvel Studios, owns the character’s film rights. As a result, the early Spider-Man movies had no connection to the MCU. That changed with Tom Holland’s portrayal, as Sony and Marvel teamed up to create three Spider-Man films featuring the young actor.

While Spider-Man is currently part of the MCU, his appearances are limited to major projects, with Sony and Disney (via Marvel) sharing the profits. Meanwhile, both companies are expanding their own separate universes—Marvel’s MCU and Sony’s SSU—without direct involvement from Spider-Man.

According to a rumor from insider DanielRPK, Sony and Disney might be negotiating a new deal that could increase Spider-Man’s future MCU appearances. This raises the question: Is it time for Sony to sell its Spider-Man rights to Disney?

Sony originally launched the Spider-Man franchise on its own, long before the MCU even existed. First came Tobey Maguire’s trilogy, which ended after the third movie underperformed. Years later, Andrew Garfield stepped in as the new Spider-Man, but his tenure lasted just two films before The Amazing Spider-Man series was also canceled.

Meanwhile, the MCU had grown into the dominant force in comic book movies, yet Spider-Man was noticeably absent.

This absence was due to financial and rights issues. However, Disney and Sony eventually reached an agreement, allowing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to join the MCU while Sony retained the character’s film rights.

At the same time, Sony began developing its own Spider-Man universe (SSU), though without Spider-Man himself. The current deal limits Sony from using Spider-Man in their films, and it also restricts Disney from utilizing the character more frequently. And now, we have this:

Although it’s still just a rumor, this one is particularly significant as it could give Spider-Man more screen time. Fans are speculating whether Sony should sell the character’s rights to Disney, but that seems unlikely for now.

Spider-Man is a lucrative asset for both companies, and Sony is unlikely to part with him for anything less than a substantial offer. Meanwhile, Disney is facing financial challenges and may not have the resources for such a large purchase at this time.

If circumstances change, it could be revisited, but for now, it’s promising that the companies are collaborating on more Spider-Man projects. Fans clearly want more of the web-slinger.

The future of Spider-Man is definitely something to watch. What do you think? Should Sony keep him and incorporate him into the SSU, or is it time to sell the rights to Disney and Marvel? Or is the current setup the best option? Let us know in the comments!
