Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has only just arrived, but the film is already facing an unusual wave of backlash online. While critics have praised the epic adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem, some users have begun leaving extremely negative reviews, leading fans to accuse certain accounts of review bombing the movie.

The film, which stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, follows the legendary Greek king’s dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces mythical threats, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso, while trying to return to his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

Nolan’s massive adaptation has been one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026, with attention surrounding everything from its $250 million budget to its groundbreaking use of IMAX 70mm film cameras. The movie also features a huge ensemble cast including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Despite the positive response from many critics, some audience reviews have taken a much harsher approach. One IMDb user gave the movie a 2/10 rating, describing it as “boring and disappointing” and criticizing the pacing of the nearly three-hour epic.

The review claimed that the film failed to capture the excitement of Homer’s original story, writing that despite the source material featuring “monsters, gods, and treacherous seas,” the movie felt slow and lacked urgency. The reviewer also criticized the dialogue and said they repeatedly checked the time while watching.

However, some fans believe these early negative reactions are not a fair reflection of the movie itself. The review pattern has raised questions about whether some of the lowest scores are coming from viewers who had already made up their minds before seeing the film.

Review bombing has become a common issue for major releases, especially for highly anticipated projects with large fanbases. Films connected to major franchises, famous directors or controversial casting decisions often receive extreme ratings from users attempting to influence overall scores.

‘The Odyssey’ had already faced online debate before release, with discussions surrounding Nolan’s casting choices, the interpretation of Greek mythology, and the decision to adapt one of the oldest stories in Western literature. Some fans questioned whether a modern filmmaker could successfully bring Homer’s epic to the big screen, while others defended Nolan’s vision.

Despite the early negative audience reviews, the overall critical response for ‘The Odyssey’ has been much stronger. Many reviewers have praised Nolan’s direction, the scale of the production and the technical achievement of creating a fully IMAX-shot epic.

The film’s long theatrical run will ultimately determine how audiences feel about it. As more viewers watch the movie and share their opinions, the early review scores may become a clearer reflection of the general audience reaction.

Do you think ‘The Odyssey’ is being unfairly review bombed?

For now, the debate around ‘The Odyssey’ has become part of the movie’s story, with fans arguing over whether the negative reviews represent genuine criticism or an organized attempt to damage the film’s reputation.
