The movie Easy Rider has always been known for showing the free and reckless spirit of the late 1960s. Released in 1969, the film follows two bikers, Wyatt and Billy, as they ride across the American Southwest after making money from a d**g deal in Mexico. Their trip takes them through communes, small towns, and finally to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Along the way, d***s are a constant part of the story.

What many fans may not know is that d***s were not just part of the script. They were also very present behind the scenes. According to the film’s cinematographer, László Kovács, d**g use on set was widely known and rarely hidden. He later said it was simply part of the environment while filming Easy Rider.

Peter Fonda, who starred in and produced the movie, backed this up in past interviews. He explained that nearly everyone on the project had their own substance of choice. For him and director Dennis Hopper, it was mostly alcohol. Fonda also admitted he smoked m*******a from time to time, but said it made him too paranoid to work properly.

That was not the case for Jack Nicholson. Nicholson played George Hanson, the boozy lawyer who joins the bikers for part of their journey. Wanting to fully understand his character, Nicholson leaned hard into method acting. During the famous campfire scene where George tries m*******a for the first time, Nicholson chose to smoke real j****s while the cameras rolled.

In an interview with Time magazine, Nicholson later revealed just how far he took it. He said he smoked around 155 j****s while filming that one scene. His goal was to act sober at first and then slowly show his character getting higher and higher as the scene went on. Kovács later said he was amazed that Nicholson stayed completely on top of his dialogue despite being clearly very stoned.

The scene became one of the most memorable moments in the film and helped launch Nicholson into stardom. His raw and unpredictable performance stood out and earned him his first Academy Award nomination.

Today, Jack Nicholson is still seen as one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history. Now 88 years old, he has mostly stayed out of the public eye. Fans were thrilled when he made a rare appearance at the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special in February 2025.

Although he has not acted in a major role since 2010, his longtime friend James L. Brooks has said Nicholson still reads scripts and could return if the right project comes along.

The story behind that Easy Rider campfire scene shows just how far Nicholson was willing to go for a role. Whether that choice made the performance better or was simply risky is still up for debate.
