Jacksepticeye Says ‘Bloodborne’ Movie Is Further Along Than Fans Might Think
For years, ‘Bloodborne’ fans have lived on hope and not much else. Prayers for a remaster have become a meme and a running joke, and a Bloomberg report in February said FromSoftware turned down a remake pitched by Bluepoint Games. In that climate, any sign of life from the franchise gets noticed.
That sign arrived in April, when Sony brought the property to the big screen. Sony announced at CinemaCon that ‘Bloodborne’ is being adapted as an R-rated animated film, and the news came from Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch. He said the adaptation will stay “very true” to the game’s gothic tone and horror.
The surprising part was who was attached. Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin is producing alongside PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, and for months the project had little else to show. Now IGN’s latest report suggests that has changed.
According to IGN, McLoughlin has provided an exclusive and promising update on the ‘Bloodborne’ film. The animated movie now has a writer and a director attached, a step forward for a project that was announced more than six months ago without either role filled.
McLoughlin made the comments while speaking with IGN about becoming the new elusive target in ‘Hitman’. He said things are much further along the pipeline than they were back in April. He added that far more of the story has been mapped out and that people are in place to make the film happen.
Don’t expect names just yet. McLoughlin did not identify the writer or director, though he hopes announcements about who is involved, along with small story teases, can come sooner rather than later. Sony has not announced a theatrical date, a streaming service, a voice cast, a trailer or any images from the movie.
The update lands against a backdrop of fan doubt. McLoughlin admitted in September that 80% of the responses to his involvement were critical, and he has said much of that reaction came from surprise at seeing a YouTuber attached to a beloved game. Considering the movie still lacked a director, writer and animation studio at that point, the skepticism was hardly shocking.
McLoughlin has leaned into that pressure rather than dodging it. He has said he feels “all the pressure in the world” to get the adaptation right, and that he wouldn’t have let it head in a direction unworthy of the ‘Bloodborne’ IP. That tracks with how he sold the project at the start, when he described ‘Bloodborne’ as his top-tier, highest-echelon game.
As for what the film will actually be, early signs point to something new. The story is thought to be an original tale within FromSoftware’s gothic universe, and McLoughlin has said he isn’t trying to retell the game’s plot. For a game whose lore is famously cryptic, that could be a smart way to avoid direct comparisons.
The timing of the update is a fun footnote, too. McLoughlin is the latest Elusive Target in ‘Hitman’, with the mission playable for free until Nov. 25. It’s a fitting stage for a creator whose ‘Bloodborne’ project fans are now hunting for details on.
Sony has plenty of game adaptations in motion, including a live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ movie slated for 2027. ‘Bloodborne’ may still be early in the process, but a confirmed writer and director are the first real signs of momentum. Whether that’s enough to quiet the skeptics will depend on who those names turn out to be.
