James Cameron says the future of the Avatar franchise may depend on making the next movies faster and cheaper than before. The filmmaker recently spoke about the massive cost and long production schedule behind the series and admitted that changes need to happen before Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 move forward.

Speaking on The Empire Film Podcast, Cameron explained that the next step for the franchise is finding a smarter way to make the films without sacrificing quality. According to him, the current process takes too much time and money.

He said, “We’re going to be looking at some new technologies to try to do them more efficiently.” Cameron added that the movies are “hideously expensive and take a long time” to produce.

The director revealed that his goal is to complete the next sequels much faster than the previous entries. He explained, “I want to do them in half the time for two-thirds of the cost. That’s my metric.” He also said it could take around a year for the team to figure out how to make that possible.

The Avatar series remains one of the biggest movie franchises ever made. Every film in the series has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. The original Avatar earned around $2.7 billion globally, while Avatar: The Way of Water brought in about $2.4 billion. The most recent movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, earned around $1.48 billion worldwide.

Even though those numbers are huge, reports suggest Disney expected Fire and Ash to perform closer to the earlier films, especially because of the movie’s reported $400 million production budget and expensive worldwide marketing campaign.

Cameron has also hinted that the future of the franchise is not completely guaranteed. In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said he would even reveal the planned stories for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 if the studio decided not to continue the saga.

He said, “If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do.”

For now, Cameron says he is still developing ideas and working on multiple projects while preparing for the next stage of the Avatar universe. The director appears focused on finding a balance between pushing technology forward and keeping the franchise financially sustainable for the studio.
