DC fans have a new reason to be excited as James Gunn and Peter Safran prepare to bring Supergirl to the big screen.

The upcoming film, part of the DC Universe (DCU), will star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. She is joined by Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. Craig Gillespie is directing, with a script by Ana Nogueira.

In Supergirl, Kara Zor-El celebrates her 21st birthday and travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto. Along the way, she meets the young Ruthye Marye Knoll and faces a tragedy that sends her on a revenge-driven journey.

Gunn has described the film as “a big science fiction epic film” and promises a more intense and “hardcore” version of Supergirl than audiences have seen before.

The story draws inspiration from the comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, though Gunn says the film will follow a three-act structure rather than mirroring the comic directly.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn described the movie as his biggest hit yet“Supergirl especially is a space adventure. It’s like Guardians,” Gunn told Rolling Stone. He also emphasized that while the film ties into the larger DCU, it stands on its own as a story.

The announcement of the Supergirl film sparked high demand for the comic book it’s based on, with copies quickly selling out on Amazon and in stores.

Gunn is working with DC Comics publisher Jim Lee to ensure more copies are printed to meet demand. The movie is part of the first chapter of the DCU, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which was revealed by Gunn and Safran in early 2023.

The film promises to retain key characters and themes from the comic while delivering a visually stunning space adventure. Fans can expect action, drama, and intergalactic exploration as Supergirl embarks on her mission.

This Supergirl movie has the potential to bring something fresh and exciting to the DCU. Comparing it to Guardians of the Galaxy gives a sense of the epic scale and fun Gunn is aiming for. What do you think about a space-faring, revenge-driven Supergirl? Share your thoughts in the comments.
