James Gunn Explains What “Grounded” Really Means in the DCU and Addresses Earth Setting Concerns
Lanterns is one of the most exciting upcoming superhero shows. It is based on the Green Lantern comic book characters and will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The show will follow the two heroes as they work together to solve a murder mystery on Earth. Inspired by shows like True Detective and Slow Horses, Lanterns will have a dark and serious tone.
Not much is known about the plot currently, and we don’t have much in terms of set leaks, but the show was in the past described as “grounded,” which didn’t sit well with some fans taking into account that Green Lanterns are in general everything but grounded in the comic books.
Now, James Gunn recently explained on his Threads account what this “grounded” actually means in the context of the DCU overall.
A fan on threads asked James Gunn if most of the new DC Universe stories will happen on Earth, due to his comments in the past how they will be “grounded.”
James Gunn replied and explained that’s not what he meant. He said “grounded” doesn’t mean everything takes place on Earth. He meant the stories will have well-developed characters who make real and believable choices, even if the story happens in space or on another planet.

Gunn mainly spoke about the DCU, but his comments also reassure fans of Lanterns who were worried the show might turn into a space cop drama.
While the first two DCU projects are set on Earth, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has already begun production, is expected to include scenes set in space, if the set leaks are accurate and if the film follows the original story it’s based on.
