James Gunn Just Threw Cold Water on That Viral ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Cast List

Casting speculation has become its own cottage industry within superhero fandom, with dedicated trackers compiling every rumor, leak, and confirmed announcement into sprawling master lists. That kind of exhaustive cataloging recently hit a snag when the person actually running the show decided to weigh in.

‘Man of Tomorrow,’ James Gunn’s follow-up to 2025’s ‘Superman,’ has been steadily building one of the more stacked ensembles in recent DC history. Between returning favorites and a wave of new additions, tracking exactly who’s confirmed for the film has become something of a full-time job for fans and outlets alike.

That effort recently culminated in a comprehensive cast breakdown from Screen Rant, cataloging every DC character reportedly locked in for the sequel so far. Gunn himself responded directly to that list, pushing back on just how accurate it actually was by suggesting that maybe only half of those names had actually been officially confirmed.

That kind of correction fits a pattern Gunn has established throughout ‘Man of Tomorrow’s’ development, where he’s repeatedly stepped in to clarify or outright debunk casting reports circulating online. Just months earlier, he publicly called out a Deadline report claiming multiple actresses had screen-tested for the villainous role of Maxima, labeling the story “shoddy and incorrect” and expressing frustration that the outlet hadn’t reached out to confirm details before publishing.

Despite that pushback, plenty of casting news for the film has come directly from Gunn himself, giving fans a genuinely confirmed core to work with. David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent, joined by Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor, with the two characters reportedly forming an uneasy alliance to face a much larger threat.

That threat comes in the form of Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger, whose casting Gunn confirmed late last year as one of the film’s central villain additions. Rachel Brosnahan also returns as Lois Lane, alongside Skyler Gisondo reprising his breakout role as Jimmy Olsen from the first film.

The ensemble expands well beyond Superman’s immediate circle as well. Aaron Pierre is set to return as John Stewart’s Green Lantern, María Gabriela de Faría is back as The Engineer despite the stalled status of her planned spinoff film, and Sara Sampaio returns as Eve Teschmacher, whose surprising heroics in the first film may have earned her a bigger role this time around.

Beyond those confirmed returnees, several new names have joined the project in roles that remain deliberately under wraps. Matthew Lillard, reuniting with Gunn for the first time since their Scooby-Doo collaborations, and Sinqua Walls have both been added to the cast without any official word on who they’ll actually be playing.

Gunn has also directly addressed some of the more persistent rumors swirling around the project, flatly denying reports that Wonder Woman or Batman had any involvement in the film’s casting process. He’s remained deliberately cagey about whether Maxima, the fiery warrior queen of Almerac, will ultimately appear at all, despite reports that Adria Arjona screen-tested for the role.

With filming underway since April and a July 9, 2027 release date locked in, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ still has plenty of casting reveals left to make official. Given how frequently Gunn has stepped in to correct the record so far, fans may want to take every unofficial cast list, however thorough, with a healthy grain of salt until he says otherwise.
