James Gunn Shares First-Ever Behind-the-Scenes Look at Superman Cousins on the Set of ‘Superman’
A new post from director James Gunn has got fans talking as he shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of the 2025 Superman.
The image shows Superman and Supergirl together in costume. Both characters are standing on set, and they look relaxed and happy.
Superman is wearing his classic blue suit with the red and gold “S” symbol, while Supergirl is also in her blue outfit. The photo also shows part of the film set in the background, with crew members and equipment visible.
James Gunn added a short caption with the post. He wrote, “First ever photo of the cousins together on the set of #Superman. #Supergirl is in theaters in one month!” This was the main source of the news and the only official information shared.
Fans reacted quickly because this is the first time both characters have been shown together during production. The timing in the caption is also perfect to promote the upcoming Supergirl movie.
Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, and it will be the second film in the new DC Universe (DCU) led by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. In the story, Supergirl travels across the galaxy on a violent quest for revenge, marking a darker take on the character compared to earlier versions.
The project has gone through several changes over time. A Supergirl film was first developed under the previous DC Extended Universe in 2018, and the character was briefly introduced in The Flash (2023), played by Sasha Calle. After James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios in 2022, the plans were reset and a new version of the film was announced in 2023.
The movie is based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira joined as writer, and Milly Alcock was cast in early 2024. Craig Gillespie came on board as director later that year. Filming took place between January and May 2025 in England and Scotland, including Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and locations in London.
Supergirl is scheduled for release on June 26, and is part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
