James Gunn Shuts Down ‘The Brave and the Bold’ Delay Rumors With a Blunt Response

The DCU has been on a steady roll since ‘Superman’ kicked off James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted universe, but the corporate drama surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery has cast a long shadow over what comes next. With Paramount Skydance’s push to acquire WBD still tangled up in litigation, fans have spent months parsing every scrap of news for clues about how the deal might reshape DC Studios’ plans.

That uncertainty reached a boiling point over the weekend when a rumor began circulating that one of the studio’s most anticipated projects, ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold,’ had quietly stalled. The claim traced back to filmmaker and columnist Dan Marcus, who said on X that he had heard from director Andy Muschietti that all work on the film was paused until the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger situation was settled.

Marcus was careful to frame it as unverified, admitting he assumed the claim was probably false even as he shared it, and Muschietti has not addressed the report publicly. Still, the rumor spread quickly enough that it prompted fans to ask James Gunn directly, and the DC Studios co-CEO didn’t hesitate to respond. Gunn said the idea didn’t sound like something Muschietti would have said and made clear the project is in no way on hold.

Gunn didn’t stop there. When another fan pressed him specifically about whether any DCU projects were paused because of the pending merger, he gave an even more direct answer, insisting that nothing across the slate is currently sitting idle. It was a rare moment of Gunn addressing merger speculation head-on, rather than letting the rumors simmer.

The rumor didn’t emerge in a vacuum. Paramount Skydance’s bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion remains locked in an antitrust fight, with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and eleven other states pushing to block the deal. A trial has been set for March 2027, meaning the corporate uncertainty hanging over WBD, and by extension DC Studios, isn’t going away anytime soon.

That drawn-out timeline has made fans understandably anxious about the fate of DC’s slate, especially a Batman project that’s already faced a bumpy road. ‘The Brave and the Bold’ was unveiled as part of Gunn and Safran’s Chapter One lineup, drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s celebrated run and positioned to introduce Damian Wayne alongside a new take on Bruce Wayne.

Unlike ‘Superman,’ which already has a confirmed sequel in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ dated for release in 2027, the Batman film has offered far fewer concrete updates, which has left plenty of room for speculation to fill the gaps.

Some reports have suggested that Muschietti himself may not know whether he’ll ultimately direct the film until the broader merger question is resolved, even if he isn’t necessarily worried about the outcome. Merger agreements of this scale often place limits on how far a company can commit to new long-term deals while a sale is pending, which has only added fuel to the idea that Warner Bros. might be treating major greenlights cautiously until ownership is settled.

For now, though, Gunn’s comments offer a clear signal that DC Studios isn’t hitting pause. With ‘Lanterns’ currently expanding the DCU on HBO and other projects like ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ reportedly moving toward production, the studio appears to be pushing forward regardless of how the Paramount-Warner Bros. situation eventually shakes out.

Whether that momentum holds once the merger trial actually gets underway remains to be seen, but for the moment, Gunn seems intent on keeping the narrative in his own hands rather than letting rumors set the tone.
