James Gunn Teases DC’s First Black Female Superhero Coming to the DCU
The DCU is about to launch its live-action phase with the release of Superman in less than two weeks. Following that, fans can look forward to Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, the Supergirl movie, and a host of other projects that have been announced and are currently in early development.
While much of the buzz has centered around The Brave and the Bold and speculation about Wonder Woman’s debut, James Gunn recently hinted that the DCU could be getting a lot more diverse in the near future.
Recently, James Gunn and the cast of Superman found themselves on Pay or Wait, and Gunn answered a few questions centered around the future of the DCU.
James Gunn was asked about Nubia, a Black female superhero from DC Comics. He said that he knows who she is and that they are talking about including her in the DC Universe . He also said he wants to have many different kinds of people represented in the DCU. He hinted that fans might be happy in the future, suggesting that Nubia could appear one day, even if it’s not very soon.
“I am very aware of Nubia. And yes we are very much talking about that and I want to have all sorts of people represented in the DCU and yeah you might be very happy in the distant future”.
Nubia is a superhero from DC Comics. She is often known as Wonder Woman’s sister. In the comics, she was created around the same time as Diana but raised separately. Like Diana, she is strong, brave, and comes from the island of the Amazons.
Nubia is important because she was one of the first Black female superheroes in mainstream comics. She shows that heroes can come from all backgrounds, and she inspires people who don’t always see themselves in superhero stories.
There’s always a slight chance that Nubia debuts in Paradise Lost.
That show is supposed to be set on the island of Themyscira, the home of the Amazons. The story takes place before Wonder Woman is born. It will focus on politics, power struggles, and conflicts between the women on the island.
Gunn and Safran said it would feel like Game of Thrones but set in the world of the Amazons. The name is similar to a 2001 comic book storyline called Paradise Island Lost, which was about a civil war on Themyscira.
That seems unlikely however, as Wonder Woman won’t debut in that project and if we’re being accurate time-wise, Nubia shouldn’t either.
