Jeep’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Ad Appears to Show Doctor Doom Leveling Xavier’s School in a Burst of Green Fire

Marvel has been dropping hints about the fate of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters for months. Almost every piece of ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ marketing that touches the X-Men has started with the same image, a battered school that looks long past its glory days. The question has always been what happened to the mansion, and who was responsible.

The first full trailer opened on a destroyed Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, as Professor X looked out the window at an explosion. An earlier X-Men teaser showed ruins within the mansion, Professor X and Magneto reunited at a chessboard and Cyclops unleashing an optic blast as large legs, possibly belonging to Sentinels, lumbered in the background. The school was clearly in trouble well before anyone saw the cause.

Now a new promotional spot from Jeep seems to answer part of that question. One frame from the ad shows the school’s plaque lying on scorched ground, with a swirl of glowing green energy tearing into it while fires burn across a smoky landscape and tall shapes loom in the distance. It reads like the moment the building is wiped out, and the green glow fits the way Doctor Doom’s power has looked in other footage.

Doom’s magic has been a visual signature of the campaign. Marvel footage shows Doom raising Sentinels, the mutant-hunting robots, from the ground before he declares that hell answers to him. One breakdown noted that Doom doesn’t control the Sentinels by overriding their program but by sending a green mist to control them.

That detail lines up with the ad. The glowing debris in the Jeep spot looks like the same kind of energy, which suggests the school’s destruction is tied to Doom’s Sentinel assault. One outlet assumed the mansion is destroyed during Doom’s Sentinel attack after promo art showed the X-Mansion burning, and that art features a fallen Sentinel in the wreckage.

The physical evidence keeps stacking up. At D23, Marvel displayed screen-used props that included a massive destroyed Sentinel head and a mangled Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters plaque. Hot Toys then revealed a giant Sentinel figure, noting that downed robots litter the grounds of Xavier’s School until Doom raises them in the movie.

Taken together, the picture is of a school that was already in ruins before Doom’s army rose, then torn apart in the fight. One trailer breakdown described a shot of the school being blown to pieces just before Cyclops scopes the place out, followed by a Gambit and Shang-Chi fight and a wide view of the battle inside the school.

The stakes for the Fox-era mutants look enormous. A rumor from earlier this year claimed the X-Men have survived countless incursions, each one nearly wiping out their universe, leaving them exhausted and broken. Marvel has not confirmed that, but the tone of the footage fits.

Commentary has already begun to frame the film as a possible endpoint for these versions of the characters. Den of Geek argued that if Marvel wants Doomsday to have any weight, this version of the X-Men needs to meet their doom for good, in the way Infinity War set its own model. That is opinion rather than confirmation, but it explains why the destruction of the school lands so heavily.

The Jeep ad is part of a larger co-branded effort. Jeep and Marvel have confirmed plans for a joint marketing campaign supporting the release of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and the brand won’t say whether its vehicles appear in the film. Seeing a major story beat show up in a car commercial is a reminder of how aggressively Marvel is selling this one.

The Russo brothers, who directed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, are behind the film, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doom. The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and X-Men all fight against Doctor Doom. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on Dec. 18, and the Sentinels, the green fire and the burning school are only a small piece of it.

What do you think Doctor Doom's attack on Xavier's School means for the X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday?
