The ‘Walking Dead’ universe has proven remarkably difficult to kill off completely, even more than a decade after the original series first put a spotlight on a zombie apocalypse unlike anything television had seen before. Spinoffs have kept multiplying, and few have resonated with fans quite like the one built entirely around two former enemies forced to coexist.

That show is ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ which reunites Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Manhattan. Now in its third season, the series has continued exploring the complicated, still-evolving relationship between two characters whose history includes one of the franchise’s most brutal moments.

With season three currently airing, speculation has understandably turned toward whether the show will continue beyond its current run. Morgan appears to have all but confirmed that possibility, signaling in a recent interview that he and the creative team already have stories in mind for a potential next chapter involving Maggie and Negan that have him more excited than he’s been in a long time.

That enthusiasm tracks with how the current season has reshaped the dynamic between the two leads. For the first time since the characters were introduced together, Maggie and Negan have moved from an uneasy, distrustful alliance into something closer to genuine partnership, a shift that’s given the show fresh emotional territory to explore even after years of built-up history between them.

Cohan has echoed similar sentiments about the show’s future, telling People that the creative team has plenty of unconventional ideas for another season, adding that if those ideas can still surprise her and Morgan after years of working on the franchise, they’ll almost certainly surprise fans as well. Cohan has also pointed out that the broader ‘Walking Dead’ universe still feels far from exhausted, even after more than a decade of storytelling across the original series and its growing list of spinoffs.

Season three’s momentum appears to support that optimism. The current season currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a strong indicator that critics have responded well to the show’s latest direction, even as the ultimate decision on renewal rests with AMC executives once the season concludes.

Both Morgan and Cohan hold executive producer credits on the series alongside showrunners Eli Jorné and Seth Hoffman, giving them direct influence over where the story goes next if it continues. That level of creative control likely explains why both actors have spoken so openly about ideas for a fourth season, rather than simply deferring the question entirely to the network.

The series itself continues to mine the fraught history between its two leads, built around the fact that Negan killed Maggie’s husband, Glenn, in one of the original show’s most devastating moments. Watching that relationship evolve from open hostility into something resembling trust has become the emotional backbone of the spinoff, and both stars seem eager to keep exploring just how far that transformation can go.

With season three still unfolding and no official renewal announcement yet, fans will have to wait for AMC to make its decision based on how the rest of the season performs. Given the strength of the reviews so far and the clear enthusiasm from both leads, though, a fourth season increasingly looks like less of a question and more of an inevitability.
