‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ Just Dropped a Chilling Teaser for Its Final Season

Norman Reedus has been swinging a crossbow through the zombie apocalypse for well over a decade now, first as part of the original ‘The Walking Dead’ ensemble and later as the lead of his own spin-off series. That long journey is now heading toward its true conclusion.

‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘ has spent three seasons taking Daryl and Carol far from the American survivors they once called family, stranding them across unfamiliar corners of Europe as they searched for a way back home. Season 3 ended with the pair still stuck in Spain, their escape boat destroyed after a violent confrontation with local warlord Fede left it in flames.

Now AMC has released the first teaser for the show’s fourth and final season, and it wastes no time raising new questions. The clip shows a battered, unconscious Daryl waking up in a hospital bed to a chilling greeting: “Welcome home, son,” spoken by a mysterious new character who immediately throws his entire sense of safety into doubt.

That voice belongs to Jimmy Smits, who has officially joined the final season as Captain Alejandro Perkins, a former U.S. Navy officer and medical doctor who found his own unusual way to survive the outbreak. His ominous introduction in the teaser immediately raises the question of whether Daryl has somehow made it back to America after everything that happened in Spain, or whether “home” means something else entirely in this new chapter.

The roughly 20-second teaser doesn’t offer much beyond that unsettling exchange, but it packs in plenty of atmosphere along the way. Between shots of walkers descending on Daryl and Carol across the rugged Spanish countryside and a closeup of Daryl’s bruised, cut-up face, AMC has made clear this final stretch won’t be an easy send-off for either character.

David Zabel, the show’s showrunner, has already made clear what fans can expect from this closing chapter. He told Deadline that the final season will complete the story of Daryl and Carol in Spain, describing it as both emotional and powerful while wrapping up what he called the characters’ European adventure.

Zabel also left the door open for these characters beyond this iteration of the show, noting there’s plenty still to explore even after this chapter closes, though he confirmed this will indeed be the fourth and final season of ‘Daryl Dixon’ as it currently exists. That distinction matters for longtime fans wondering whether this truly marks the end of Daryl’s story or simply the end of this particular format.

Reedus reprises his role as Daryl alongside Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier, with the returning cast also including Romain Levi, Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Candela Saitta, and Hugo Arbués. Behind the scenes, the season is being shepherded by an extensive team of executive producers, including Zabel, Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, Angela Kang, and franchise veterans Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, and Gale Anne Hurd, among others.

Production on the season has already wrapped, which is why AMC was able to share this early first look well ahead of the actual premiere. No specific release date has been confirmed yet beyond a general 2027 window, leaving fans with plenty of time to speculate about what Smits’ mysterious new character really represents.

With ‘Daryl Dixon’ set to conclude in 2027, this final season carries the weight of closing out one of the franchise’s most well-traveled spin-offs, one that took two of its most enduring survivors from the familiar terrain of the American South all the way across Europe. Whether Perkins turns out to be a genuine ally or another threat disguised as salvation remains to be seen, but the teaser makes clear that peace is still nowhere in sight for Daryl and Carol.
