Jensen Ackles Has a Simple Pitch to Bring ‘Supernatural’ Back, and It Starts at the Front Door

Few TV shows have a fandom as loyal as ‘Supernatural.’ More than 5 years after it ended, fans still fill convention halls, share theories, and ask the same question over and over. Jensen Ackles’ ‘Supernatural’ comeback pitch is the latest answer to that question.

The show ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020, following brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they hunted monsters across America. It built a massively loyal global fanbase, and its stars have never quite left it behind. That devotion is on full display on the convention circuit.

Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins still regularly attend fan events as part of Creation Entertainment’s ‘The Road So Far… The Road Ahead’ tour. The latest stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, ran September 25 to 27, with Ackles and Collins headlining. Padalecki wasn’t able to attend that one.

At a Creation panel captured on video by the fan site Fangasm, Ackles opened up about how he would bring the show back. He admitted he wishes the series had ended on a cliffhanger. The clip spread quickly online, with CoveredGeekly’s post passing 177,000 views.

His idea is refreshingly simple. Ackles said he would have liked Jack to walk through the front door, approach Sam and Dean, and tell the brothers he needs to send them back. The idea leaves the door to more adventures wide open, with the show’s most powerful character acting as the key.

Jack, played by Alexander Calvert, has always been a wildcard. Introduced as Lucifer’s son in season 13, he started the story unsure of himself and the world. He was later killed by Chuck and resurrected by Death in the hopes of killing God, eventually becoming God himself.

The finale remains a sore spot for some viewers. In ‘Carry On,’ Sam and Dean return to their regular lives of hunting monsters, until Dean is impaled in the back by a spike during a fight with vampires. The ending wrapped up the main plot points and did not include a major cliffhanger.

That is exactly what Ackles’ idea would change. A knock on the door would turn a closed ending into an open invitation. It would also give a returning story a built-in reason to exist.

Ackles isn’t the only one with ideas. Padalecki has said he would want a revival structured as a limited series event, similar to the four-episode ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ on Netflix. Collins’ idea involves time travel and parallel dimensions.

Creator Eric Kripke has also said he would return to ‘Supernatural’ with the right story. Ackles has confirmed he would be happy to come back too, though his other work makes it hard to find time to shoot. He has said his schedule with Amazon keeps him busy, and the ‘Vought Rising’ prequel is expected in 2027.

There is a built-in path for a return. ‘The Winchesters’ prequel revealed that it exists in an alternate reality to the one ‘Supernatural’ was set in, and a version of Sam and Dean exists in that multiverse. Some commentators have argued the multiverse is the only way a reboot would work.

Jack’s role in Ackles’ pitch would fit neatly with that. As a god who can reshape reality, he could plausibly send the brothers anywhere. That gives writers plenty of freedom.

There has been no official announcement about a season 16. Still, the franchise is far from dormant. A new Dynamite comic series set between seasons 1 and 2 follows a monster-of-the-week format, and its variant covers feature Ackles and Padalecki as Dean and Sam.

Fans remain hungry for more. Whether the pitch ever becomes a real plan depends on schedules, studios, and the right story, but it is clear the appetite is there. For now, the door remains open, just as Ackles would have liked.
