Jensen Ackles Just Confirmed His ‘Tracker’ Return with Brand New Set Photos
CBS’ ‘Tracker‘ has spent the better part of four seasons building one of broadcast television’s most quietly beloved family dynamics, and much of that comes down to the tension simmering between its two Shaw brothers. Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw has always been the steady center of the show, but it’s his complicated relationship with his older brother that keeps fans coming back for more.
That dynamic has only grown more layered as ‘Tracker’ has leaned further into the mystery surrounding the Shaw family’s past, particularly their father’s shadowy government work. With Season 4 already deep into production, speculation had been swirling for weeks about whether one particular fan-favorite face would make it back into the mix this time around.
Now the wait is over. Jensen Ackles has shared new behind-the-scenes photos from the set of ‘Tracker’ Season 4, officially confirming his return as Russell Shaw, the estranged older brother whose loyalty and secrecy have made him one of the show’s most compelling recurring characters.
The confirmation comes after months of uncertainty, since Russell’s Season 3 exit left his fate genuinely unclear heading into the new season. Ackles has appeared in some capacity during every season of ‘Tracker’ so far, though his screen time has typically been limited to a handful of episodes per run, making each appearance feel like an event rather than a guarantee.
Justin Hartley himself broke the news of Ackles’ return during a panel at Televerse 26, the Television Academy’s annual festival, putting months of fan speculation to rest. Speaking at the Los Angeles event, Hartley confirmed that Ackles will return as Colter’s brother, Russell Shaw, in Tracker Season 4, revealing that he would be on set filming the following week.
According to Hartley, Russell’s return picks up right where his complicated arc left off. “We left him in a place where he was doing something for Colter — keeping a secret from him, but for Colter’s own good,” Hartley explained during the panel, via TVLine. “He took one for the team. Quid pro quo: ‘I’ll do this for you… just keep him out of it. He doesn’t need to know any of this. It’s to protect him.'”
That secret has apparently caught up with him. Hartley teased that when the brothers reunite this season, Russell needs a favor from Colter and his particular skill set, sending the two of them to work together to untangle a problem Russell’s found himself in, along with a friend of his.
Russell’s on-again, off-again presence has become part of the show’s rhythm since ‘Tracker’ first premiered, and his absence would have been a notable departure for a series that has leaned into the Shaw family’s messy, unresolved history. Fans have long considered Russell among the strongest supporting characters on the show, and there was real concern he might not factor into the new chapter at all following his ambiguous Season 3 send-off.
Production on ‘Tracker’ Season 4 has also relocated from Vancouver, where the first three seasons were filmed, to Los Angeles, marking a notable behind-the-scenes shift for the CBS drama even as its central sibling story continues uninterrupted. The new season is set to premiere Sunday, October 4, airing at a special time immediately following the Season 2 premiere of the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘Marshals.’
With Ackles now confirmed and cameras already rolling on his scenes, the stage is set for another round of Shaw family drama when ‘Tracker’ returns this fall.
