The story explores a critical moment in Springsteen’s life as he worked on Nebraska, a raw, acoustic album recorded in his New Jersey bedroom on a simple 4-track recorder. The album depicts the struggles of blue-collar Americans, and the film dives into Springsteen’s personal challenges and pressures just as he was on the brink of global stardom.
The project was announced in March 2024, with Springsteen and Landau actively involved. Producers include Scott Stuber, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Scott Cooper, and Eric Robinson, who brought the story to Cooper. Zanes, the author of the book, also serves as an executive producer.
Although A24 was initially expected to acquire distribution rights, 20th Century Studios ultimately won a heated bidding war to finance and distribute the film.
Casting came together over several months. Jeremy Strong joined as Jon Landau in October 2024, followed by Paul Walter Hauser and Odessa Young in June. Stephen Graham joined in September, while Johnny Cannizzaro, Harrison Gilbertson, Marc Maron, Gaby Hoffmann, and David Krumholtz were added later that year.
Filming began on October 28, 2024, primarily in New York and New Jersey, with additional shooting in Los Angeles. Bruce Springsteen made special visits to sets in Rockaway, Bayonne, Asbury Park, the Meadowlands, and Freehold Borough, meeting White several times during production. Filming wrapped in January.
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere premiered at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival on August 29, and will be released theatrically by 20th Century Studios in the United States on October 24, 2025.
Early reviews are positive, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 93% approval rating based on 14 critic reviews and Metacritic giving the film a score of 69 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
With a strong cast, close involvement from Springsteen himself, and the release of the trailer generating excitement, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of the legendary musician.
